Tail Light wiring

So yesterday, I put new tail lights & wiring on my 60 f250 4x4. everything works EXCEPT that when the lights are on, the right brake light stays on, & when you push the brake, the left brake light comes on & the right one goes out. BTW, I just used a standard trailer light kit; could this have something to do with it? Any other ideas? Thanks.

Using a trailer light kit could have something to do with it if you hooked up the wires wrong.

First, why did you rewire it? Was it not working correctly to start with?

Ok, Brake and signal lights use the same circuit, wire and bulb filiment. That power flows through the brake light switch then up to the signal switch then two wires out to the tail lights - left and right. The running lights come directly off the headlight switch and theter is a single wire that goes first to the left light then over to the right light.

In this particular case you haven't described everything that happens but I would guess that you have the brake light and tail light wires criss crossed on the right light. Try flip flopping them.

I can't believe I didn't think of that! I used a trailer light kit because the tail lights were missing, the wires were cut in many places, and most importantly it was cheaper than the OE tail lights(I was laid off in mid-Apr & just recently started working again, though I'm still under-employed). When I have a little more $$$, I'll try to use all OE perts, but for now, I just want to get it liscenced so I can take it out & enjoy it.

LOL!

When a problem on these trucks is just "bustin' your chops" more often than not, the answer is right in front of your eyes but it takes someone with a clear head to point it out.

However, that may not be the right answer - try it frst and let me know.
