When did your trans go out? How many miles? What do you use the truck for?

Mine has given out at 184K. Died in the driveway getting ready to hook up my 5th wheel. It wouldn't go at all, forward or backward.
I ordered a Ford OEM HD Tranny on Friday 11/12. I was told today that it was in. Tax and all, I will have $3k in the new tranny. I almost have the old one out and will carry it to dealer for the core.
The new tranny comes with a new torque convertor. I hope to have the new one installed by the end of this weekend.

My tranny did not go out. Motor went out at 168k due to cavitation/hydrolocking. Rebuilt motor myself, and then decided since the truck was already torn down, tranny is out and waiting for parts to show up. Tranny had 3 fluid changes, all with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF (40k, 80k, 120k). It was still shifting/working fine after 8 years behind chipped motor towing 4k to 12k, plus daily driver.

176k on the clock. Started life pulling gooseneck with demo equipment for construction equipment (backhoes, skidsteers etc). Known it for the last40k miles and owned for the last 20 K. Looks to be original but not known for sure. It has pretty wicked shifts with a hell of a thump if u keep foot in it. Scared to do anything to it for fear it will quit. Trans would cost more than I have in truck.

No, I already have a 31 row 6.0 cooler. I will backflush it. I put the cooler in 5 months ago.
I don't know why my tranny died, but pulling the pan and torque convertor plug to drain it has not shown any metal. The pan magnet had the normal clutch material, but no pieces bigger than the clutch slime.
I hope to finish pulling the old one tonight or tomorrow night. I have it all apart except the 6 tranny to motor bolts. I am pulling the transfer case out with the tranny (tranny jack is big enough for both).

No issues so far. Bought in Jan 2007 with 60k, chip almost immediately, trans mod'ed by me & TransGo summer of 2007. Added a 6.0L cooler later. PO had it serviced regularly by the dealer, and I changed the fluid after 30k with syn Merc V (Mobil1). Currently at ~115k, 238cc hybrids since ~100k, and has been holding together at twice the stock HP/torque. Saving for BTS as well..... (knocking on wood)

I voted for the auto in the Excursion. Its at 240k on original stock trans, but the TC is really slippy. It holds fine when it is locked, but when TC is not locked - it will go to redline. This was pretty much the case at 160k when I bought it, but its much worse now. I've never towed more than the ski boat, 'yota rock crawler and small trailers and the x-wife drove it 'over the mountain' to school for 40k miles - dunno about PO's uses, but it did come with a brake controller. Its been chipped (100hp and 80e) since I got it, but I've been running in stock for quite awhile - it still shifts poorly and I have to take my foot out of it to get it to shift alot, but its worse with tunes... If I can get in, I'll have a BTS by the end of the year!!! Then the 'build' begins - I decided there just aren't enough FAST Excursions. Just wanna do my part! -I've been dreaming of a pro-charger! (donations accepted via paypal )
The ZF6 has 320k, works fine except 4th gear synchros don't always co-operate. I've been driving it for over 200k and seldom use the clutch except off the line. I've towed at 20k+ GCVW for at least 50% of these miles all over the US (read: mountains!). At 180k I put a LUK in it after the clutch disc was contaminated with oil and diesel - pilot bearing was FUBAR. At 290k, I pulled trans to inspect pilot (actually install kevlar bushing) and replace up-pipes. Pilot bearing was FUBAR again and LUK disc was worn out and had springs falling out. I did not have time to wait for a new clutch set, since I was using a friends shop on the weekend - so I put an autozone clutch set in it. Then at 308k I ended up rebuilding engine and putting a SouthBend Con OFE (ceramic on one side and semi-metallic? on the other). Still on original hydraulics.

Page 2: CAUTION: Whenever the transmission is replaced on 1999 and newer F-Series Super Duty or 2000 and newer Excursion, the Oil to Air (OTA) cooler (7A095) MUST be REPLACED.
Somebody said that Brian of BTS told him that a 6.0 cooler can be backflushed. IDK. I have always tossed my old coolers out. You could check with him about that.

Current truck: 2003 F250 7.3. Just a tick over about 210k on the original tranny and no issues. Truck is my daily driver and I periodically pull about 7k lbs on the highway.
Previous truck: 2000 F250 7.3. Had 315k on the original trans when I sold it. Use was the same as the truck above. Never had a problem with the tranny slipping, but towards the end of my ownership, it would spew trans fluid out the front pump seal after it got hot (sometimes). Common problem on these, but the unit never failed.
