Mine's a 2000. It saw mainly Texas highway miles for its first 125,000 as an oil man's Cowboy Cadillac, cruising from Bartlesville to Houston, Midland to Morgan City.
It then became a daily driver in the Los Angeles area doing street and freeway stop-n-go duty, hauling maybe a thousand pounds of tools around in the bed.
Once in a while it's called upon to pull a ten-foot enclosed trailer cross-country, which weighs about 3500 loaded.
It has done all these jobs flawlessly, using the original transmission, and it now has 196,000 on the clock.
I do not know how often the fluid got changed during the first 125K, but the original owner had Texas-area Ford dealers service the truck like clockwork. The first fluid change MAY have come at 125K (though I really doubt it had never been changed before), and it has been changed twice since. When I had the pan down to change the fluid upon initial purchase, it also got a Sonnax .427" line pressure modulator valve and some stiffer springs in the tricumulator to allow it to shift more positively.
Since my primary emphasis is on reliability, I have also added an external spin-on filter in the cooler lines. I really should add that TruCool 47391 cooler up-front, too, as added insurance.
As far as I know, it has never seen synthetic fluid.
It has only had to support stock power levels, and so far, it just keeps on ticking....

Almost 120,000 on the clock.. The previous owner let a salesman drive it plus he occasionally towed his racecar.. plus a few ambulances from the factory for its 1st 88,000... since then. I have chipped it.. hauled a lot of firewood & put maybe 2500 miles on it towing our 8000 lb 5th wheel And.. well, i'll get back to you when it goes out. Just takin a brake from fabricating a new tranny cooler line so I can finish my flush & see if there's any difference. Maybe after this flush i'll get another 120,000 out of it !!!
Rick, just curious.. Did Brian give you any ideas on the condition your tranny was in when he did your rebiuld??

Bought my 01 F250 truck when it had 55k miles, performed an unintentional fluid change at about 75k miles, turned 180k this week. Used as daily driver 100 miles a day ( 70 miles hwy), tow a 12k lb boat about a dozen times a year 100 miles round trip each time, tow tractors, cars, boats, and other misc trailer loads as needed. Still ticking with no troubles yet (damn, just jinxed myself).

Can I vote twice? The OEM trans only lasted 17K, as it was an '01 4R100 with the mechanical diode. Ford replaced the tranny (with a new one, I think, as there's no reman sticker on it). The coast clutches went out on it right at 117K, so it lasted 100K. I still drive the truck ('01 Excursion), but I need to get a BTS in before I tow again. I live in Colorado, so coast clutches are kind of important...

Mine went out at 90,000 miles. Combination of lift, tires, offroading, and drag racing that took it out. Can't blame it on anything else. I did it.
It always was maintained, regular flushes and filter changes.... just abused HARD at the race track. Torque converter started slipping one day in the race tune when under heavy throttle. Drove it another month before it started doing the same thing in other tunes. Got to the point where if I was deep in the go pedal and the torque converter tried to lock, the motor would rev and bounce of the limiter.

Hello to my old friends!!! When I bought my 1999 with 70K on it, it already had a Ford rebuilt transmission in it . Then at about 120K that went south too (supplemental cooling & filtration with 26 quart capacity, yearly fluid change) with reverse really shaky, but forward gears alright. Drove it to John Wood tranny and I do believe I'll have that tranny in it until the truck falls apart. Lots of metal in the pan when he pulled it, but it shifted in forward gears perfectly...JW said it would not have made it much further though). Truck gets about 5k - 10k a year towing and that is about all the driving it gets.

My F350 had 185,000 miles when I bought it. Driving it up from Texas to NY, I noticed the trans temps getting high (180 - 200), I went fairly slow to keep the temps down, but it didn't last long (a month or two)(and then parked several months). I did not have the $ for a BTS, so I had a local shop rebuild it with the best parts they could get. When they rebuilt it they said that it had been done before, and that it didn't look like a quality rebuild. I don't know for sure that the first time it went was before 180,000 (but I voted that way), nor do I know that the previous rebuild was the first.
It has both a 5th wheel and goose-neck hitch, so I assume it was used to tow some substantial loads, and it had been chipped. I have used it 80% of the time for daily driving, and 20% towing an average of 5k, but up to about 12.5k, and I installed a DP tuner.
It now has 204,000 mi, and the trans went again two weeks ago. Fortunately, the transmission shop covered it under warranty (even though it was past their normal warranty of 1year/12K miles (it was about 15 months and 15k miles). The trans shop foreman said that the spring plate in the forward clutch had broke causing the clutches to wear prematurely, and that it was kind of a fluke thing and that I should not worry about it happening again. I have to admit I am worried about it happening again, if it does, I will do either a BTS or JW.
So in my case with a little over 200,000 miles there have been at least three rebuilds. By the way, it had a small auxiliary cooler in it when I bought it, and I put in a 6.0 cooler when I had it rebuilt the first time. Temps never go over 150*.

I just got the truck a couple months ago(200,4xx), nothing in history about about any trany work. Has a fifth wheal (looks like it got tweaked a few times) has an add-a-leaf and a big dent in the bed from wear the air bag blew. So I am pretty sure it was a hauler (moved around from the western states cal and washington to chicago).
Still shifts like new through every gear L-1-2-3-4-5. Or is this thread four the lazy for speads!

My old 99 250 with ZF-6 was still rolling just fine with @320k on the clock when i sold it...
The one i'm picking up Monday has 308k on the clicker and seems to be fine...shifts well through all gears, but i do have a question about it as this will be my first PSD with an auto...when taking off from a stop, it seems that there is a lag from the time i hit the go pedal until the rig actually moves...is that normal, or should i have the dealer check it out?...well, i'm probably gonna have them check it anyway, but i'm still curious...
