Question Rear Axle Whine/Moan

2000 v-10 4x4 3.73 gears with limited slip.

The truck has an intermittant whine in the rear end. This happens most noticably at 50-65 mph. when I let off the gas and sometimes when I hit the gas softly. Is there supposed to be a little noise or could the pinion gear/shaft/bearing be bad. I have seen alot of guys complaining of bad rearends with a noise like mine. My truck only has 23000 miles on it. I noticed the same sound in my buddys 99 explorer the other day also. Let me know what ya' think1 Thanks.

Make sure your diff fluid is topped off first. If it is already full or you fill it and the sound does not go away, then you might just have a bad bearing somwhere. If it turns out that you have a bad bearing it might not be a bad idea to do all of the bearings at the same time to make sure you wont be tearing the axle apart in another couple of months or so. More importantly if the axle was run for an extended period of time with no gear oil.

If it were mine. I would first verify the level (Some leave the factory low) and then remove the cover for an inspection. Check for anything abnormal or excessive metal particles. Broken teeth or abnormal wear pattern on the gears. My LSD had some broken tabs from the clutch pack floating around in there. Somebody said that was normal or at least common. When you refill don't forget to add the friction modifier.
