1997 F250 Starting Problem... Please help

Hello everybody... here is my problem. I have a 97 F250 (5.8L) that I let sit for a week or two and all of a sudden it would not start; It just kept cranking and cranking. I changed all the plugs, coil, and fuel filter, but still nothing. If I spray ether into the intake, it will start right up for the entire day, but runs like crap. It actually send too much fuel to the plugs and fouls them out and backfires like crazy. It also has trouble moving, like there is not enough fuel being burned to push the truck. On a side note, I did remove my side tank because it was leaking and simply capped the lines coming from the sending unit, but did run 1 or 2 tanks of fuel through the rear tank before this problem occured. Also, I did check for spark and each plug does have spark. There is also 35 pounds of pressure coming from the sending unit. My one buddy said the diaphragm may be ripped, but I was not sure if this truck had one or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated, because the shop it has been sitting at for the last month isnt really helping at all.
