Fuel Filter Location
I'm getting ready to change my fuel filter on the 79 f350 with 460 in it. I have looked in the repair manuel for the locations but I cant find anything. I know there is the small one on the carb but is there an inline filter on the fuel line anywhere? I have not looked around really yet but I figure I would ask so I can go right to the spot it should be. I looked on the parts store websites and two of them show the carb filter and another one shows an inline filter so I bought the inline filter. The carb filter was clean.

Not sure if this applies to your truck, but I discovered a few months ago that my 73 390 is suppose to have an inline filter before the fuel pump, but a PO must have removed it. It would have been a metal canister with a removable paper element type filter inside. You can still buy the paper element filter refill at the auto stores. And I believe Dennis Carpenter sells the actual canister.
I run the filter at the carb and also a 'see through' inline filter before that.

C4AZ9365B .. Cartridge Fuel Filter (Motorcraft FG1A) / Available from Ford.
Fits: 1964/72 F100/350 I-6 & V8 / 1973/76 F100/350 360/390 / 1963/64 & some 1965/71 Passenger Cars.
This filter fits inside a canister that threads onto the fuel pump. Most people are unaware it's there, so it rarely gets changed.
C3AZ9355A .. Cartridge Fuel Filter Canister / Obsolete
Even though obsolete, it can be found from repro parts sellers, obsolete parts vendors and some FoMoCo Dealers.

D1AZ9A011A .. Plastic Meshed Filter Screen- 3/8" I.D. / Use w/o In-Cab Fuel Tank / Available from Ford.
Fits: 1965/79 Passenger Cars (except Maverick/CometPinto/Bobcat-all 5/16" I.D.) Econoline & Bronco / 1968/72 F100/350 with Mid-Ship fuel tank / 1973/79 F100/350 w/Mid-Ship & Aft Axle fuel tanks.
This screen slides onto the end of the fuel sending unit's pickup tube.
Fits: 1965/79 2V Passenger Cars (& 1965/66 4V) / 1973/79 F100/350's / 1966/79 Bronco's / 1965/79 Econolines.

I know this is an old thread but just in case anyone finds this via a search, I want to see if numbers dummy and shed some light on part .C4AZ9365B. It looks like this should work on 73-79 fuel pumps, but my 75 swb fe360 f100's pump looks like this one which has no room for a filter: https://www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts...BoCmTYQAvD_BwE

Interesting. Ive been reading those parts diagrams on f100central and they don't explicity show a diagram of the pump for the 360/390 (as they do on the 302/330 which was posted above).
The parts diagrams are however marginally good enough to show an unfiltered pump in the FE diagrams. Further, Rockauto seems to imply that (for the 360) you should only use a filtered pump with an in cab tank. Unless the flow rating is different, I'm inclined to believe that you could just slap a filtered pump on there and call it good.

This is the only fuel pump pic in the 1973/79 Ford 100/500 series Truck Parts Catalog.
The 302 pump is different, but the 330 FT used the same pump as the 360/390 FE
RockAuto is not FoMoCo. The cartridge filter fuel pumps were used from 1964 thru 1979 on myriad different car/truck engines.
Types of fuel tanks don't make a damn bit of difference!

I bought the fuel pump Bill listed above, earlier this year. I chose to zip tie a cutup piece of old radiator hose onto my existing radiator hose as the canister was rubbing on the back of the lower radiator hose.. Maybe I am just super cautious being an aviation guy, have seen way too much chaffing issues.
Previously I was going to install an inline fuel filter up on the frame rail but went with the cartridge fuel pump.
I do have a metal filter between the fuel pump and the carb but it will go away when I redo my metal line. I installed the metal inline before I installed the canister fuel pump.
