I may have an icp sensor problem. The truck is at a different location than where I am so I would like to do some internet homework to see how hard this will be to change. Does it just unscrew from the driver's side head? Do I need any special tools? Odd ball socket size? Does the wiring just pull of off the sensor?
My truck had a slight hiccup the other day, no codes, acted as if I switched from a chipped setting and then to stock and then back again. I have a long trip coming up and want to carry an extra sensor. Thanks.

 

Easiest one to change. No special tools. Wire just unplugs.

Common problem with these are when you unplug the wire connector and you see oil. in the connector.. Another is when the truck won't start and unplugging it will allow you to start.. But it will only idle once it is unplugged. And then you would call is scrap.

What are you symptoms?

Driver side head right behind the alternator. Right out in the open.

 

Symptoms are:
I was driving very slow and I heard an increase in injector sound, as if I switched to the chipped setting and then back and forth. Also, intermittently under very light throttle, the same sound occured and the truck mildly hesitated. I believe it only happened in a chip setting and it very intermittent. I drove it around the next day and it was flawless. I noticed in the chipped setting, the idle dropped from 700 to 665 or so and then right back up. Under more aggressive acceleration, it was flawless. What do you think?

 

Does it just unscrew from the driver's side head? Yep!


Do I need any special tools? Nope. Just a wrench!

Odd ball socket size? No sockets, open-ended wrench. There are a few different sizes since Ford changed the design at some point, can't tell you exactly what size.

Does the wiring just pull of off the sensor? Simple push-style clip like most sensors on these trucks.

 

If I remember correctly it is a 3/4 socket, wrench. Very easy to change.

 

If it's the original, the hex bolt is recessed under the sensor and needs a 5/8 open end or crow foot to get it off. The replacements are on top.

 

I have seen some of the original style ones on ebay and some of the new silver ones on ebay. Any real difference? Thanks guys.

 

definately a crows foot if it is original, no room to really swing an open end. the hardest part is paying the $140 for the new one.

 

I found a new style one, in unopened package, shipped to my door for $91 on ebay.

 

I would have problebly put a code reader on it first before buying anything but if you don't have a resource for a code reader than by all means. Have you pulled the sensor out and checked for any oiled connectors??

 

I have ae and a scangauge. It did not show any codes. But, I am traveling this weekend and figured it would be a good insurance policy. I am also going to put my stock pcm back in tomorrow and rule out my chip/cable.

 

Gotya, understandable, can't beat insurance. Why I asked is a fellow member and friend here KHusp had a simular problem and my Superchips code reader picked up his bad ICP, thru a code.

 

I just swapped mine out but didn't have a crowsfoot to remove the old one. I just used a plumber's basin wrench and popped it right out. Here's a pic of the old and new side by side as well as the new one installed. I had to use the basin wrench to install the new one too so the nut's a little scarred.

 

What ever works, guy. Glad you got it out and your happy. Did you clean the plug real good with electrical contact cleaner and put a little dialectric grease on the purple boot? They are usually pretty oily by the time they are swapped out.
