1970 Contractor Special Ranger

Hello, I am new here. I will give an intro and get to business.

I have recently purchased another ford. I figured there were forums out there for it. I had never been a ford person but always had fords to drive. My Father had a 55 chevy 2dr 210 and a 57 suburban as his classics. He bought a 76 pinto new from a childhood friend who owned Wilson-Cornelius Ford in Vallejo California(North Bay) and then traded it in for a 78 Clubwagon 250(460 auto). In 83 he traded it in for a new 83 T-Bird Turbo Coupe(4cyl 5spd). My Mother had a 66 mustang(6cyl 3spd) my grandpa gave her for high school graduation which I wrecked in high school(not my fault). The Tbird and mustang are what i learned to drive in. My Father sold his 55 chevy in 96 so we thought of getting a truck with no preference in mind, just good running good deal. My Father Does auto upholstery(still does we're in Alabama now with a shop) and he had another friend he did upholstery work for in Vallejo had auto alley wholesale on springs rd. My Pops asked him to look out for a truck and next week from the auction we got a mint 1971 F100 custom farm & ranch special(360 4spd w/granny gear) for $700 and it was in staight mint condition. Best truck we ever had probably best vehicle next to the Tbird and the 94 SHO 5spd I had. We used that truck for everything. To the lake towing the boat, hauling garabage, commuting to San Rafael or San Francisco. It wasnt that bad on gas. Eitherway that truck is all our family talks about in way of trucks since we sold it when my parents moved to Wyoming in 2002 then coming to Alabama in 2005. I had a 73 chevy w/ rebuilt 350 4spd and i though i was doing something but it was trash compared to farm and ranch w/ 80k on it. I noticed that fords kick *** compared to a chevy. I have a 55 chevy wagon but thats all I'll do as far as chevy goes now. I like big pontiacs buicks and oldsmobiles. But as far as fords we have been looking long and far for a nice farm ranch and cannot find one. While looking for info on them I saw the stuff about the special ford trucks. Ive been about ready to just get a camper special but I found a 1970 F250 Ranger Contractor Special. I cant find another one of those for sale anywhere. I also found out about the ford truck packages from custom to xlt. I thought it was weird my farm and ranch was a base custom with delete everything as i remember maybe had heat but that was it not even a radio but this Contractor Special is a ranger and is great shape. I will try and get all the info off this truck for you all and post pics. I am now positive Fords are far superior than GM trucks when it comes to reliability and smooth rides. This Ranger CS is like a frickn cadillac compared to a chevy.

Since I was born here is a list of our Fords in order of purchase and what we have now.
1966 mustang (wrecked totally)
1978 e250 clubwagon(trade in)
1983 TBird Turbo coupe(still have it)
1971 F100 Custom farm ranch special mint(sold it for $1000) Damn!!!
1986 Crown Vic( my grandpa gave us when he was too old to drive)(sold)
1994 Taurus SHO 3.0 5spd(sold)
2000 Crown Vic P71 from City of Pelham AL fleet.(still have it)
1970 F250 Ranger Contractor Special(Just got it)

I had been scouting for a while and had even been trolling around here and other ford sites trying to find something good. I have just got home with it and would like to know where to look for numbers and build sheets. Anything paper work wise. Does anyone have info about this vehicle? Anyone know how many were built? Im looking to know everything I can about this truck so if anyone could help it would be very much appreciated. Again I will post pics and look up any info off the truck if anyone is interested. Thanks in advanced for any help

Welcome to FTE

You can call Ford's 800 number and order a copy of your trucks original build sheet. It's free, but it will takes weeks to get, as Ford has to get the info from martiauto.com.

In the late 1980's, Ford was plannng to THROW AWAY all the data that pertained to all 1967/79 FoMoCo vehicles.

Kevin Marti, a Mustang 'nut' from Phoenix AZ found about about Ford's plan and got ALL of it.

Additional info is available from Marti, including a copy of the original window sticker, but there is a fee for this and other services. This is known in the hobby as a Marti Report.

The 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog is available on a CD from hipoparts.com for $22.00.

faxonautolit.com has original shop manuals, sales brochures, owner manuals, accessory brochures, dealer facts books and etc.

Thanks for the info Step and numbers. I will be looking into all of that. I looked in the jam of the truck and it has built in Canada on it. Would they still be able to get info on it being from Canada? I guess Ill get the vin off it and post it. Maybe someone could tell me a little more.

As for the truck its pretty solid but does need a bit of work. Im going to be looking trying to get new trim for it. I'm not real happy about the shape of the front and rear bumpers and riding behind it you can see a little dog tracking. Im gonna come back with some more info.

Most 1965/72 and all 1973/79 Crew Cabs were assembled in Canada, most were sold in the US.

After 1968, there were no assembled in and sold new in Canadian only vehicles. Most Canadian assembled vehicles were/are sold in the US.

Same-o same-o today. My 2008 Edge was assembled in Oakville.

The 5th digit of the VIN is the assembly plant code: C = Oakville, Ontario Canada.

The DSO code is listed on the Warranty Plate, post what it is.

This will tell you, once decoded, in what city the dealer that sold the truck new, ordered it from.

Dog tracking is usually caused by a broken rear spring, which causes the rear axle to shift over to one side.

Wow, thanks for the great info. I'll go check the springs and I wrote the data down and looked up what codes i could find.

I bought it north west of ATL GA

F25HCH14965
131 MT F253 N4 G 37
06100 180 4000 21

I saw that G was the automatic but what is 37? I know I need to look into buying the literature. I will see what I can come up with without everything being spoon fed. I will take some pics and try to load them.

Does anyone have sites or a company they think is best for buying parts and trim. I see there are a few catalog spots. Just looking for who might have better quality parts or the best price. I know you cant get both sometimes. Thanks

Thats too bad. Sounds like a lot of posts. i will try and buy all the literature i can. I have the booklet on the Onan generator. It runs good and starts right up. The old man said the muffler went bad and he put a lawn mower muffler on it or something and its really loud. I need to try and get the right muffler for it.
Numberdummy is the man. Yeah I want to restore this as much as I can and afford.

Fixed it for you.

No FT engines (330 M/D; 330 H/D; 361/391) were installed in anything smaller than F500's, 1964/78 with one exception: ONLY 1973/78 U-Haul F350's had the 330 FT engine.

C is the VIN engine code for 1966/72 330 2V M/D / D is the VIN engine code for 1966/72 330 2V H/D. 1965/66's use different codes.

* Thru 1978, Ford used the G TRANS code for every A/T in F100/350's. One had to know which transmission came with what engine.

btw Debby, the Onan Generator is illustrated here: 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog / Illustration Section 60, Page 18.

Can one of you help me put pics up?

What parts do I need to rebuild the front end or does someone sell a complete kit?

What mirrors would be correct for my truck?
