Sound System in my Expedition

I want to put a sound system in my expedition. I don't know exactly where to start. I want to put new speakers, amp and a sub. I'm thinking about taking the far backseat out and putting the sub there. Also some links to websites that have good speakers, amps and subs would be nice. help please.

Also if you have pictures of your sound system in your expedition Can you post pictures? I would love to see them.

Do you have the 'premium' sound option? Front doors should say "premium" on the grills. What about the factory 6 disc changer in the center console?

I will get to details shortly. I'm just trying to judge what you have.

OK, upgrading your sound system is pretty straight forward and relatively easy unless you are dreaming of tweeters in the pillars and fiberglass enclosures...

If you are looking to keep it simple then I can help. Adding aftermarket speakers to replace the factory ones is simple. The best website with customer support is Crutchfield. You pay a premium but if you have any issues, they are there and will stay on the phone until the issue is solved. (On a side note I did have a problem with an install on a VW Beetle and was on the phone for over an hour and they were excellent the entire time.)

Start at Crutchfield and use their Outfit My Car feature (choose w/o Mach Audio) and decide what components you like. Post them back here and I will follow up with this post tomorrow. I'm currently in the middle of upgrading my sound system as well and will post out more thoroughly what I've done, what I like, what I dislike, and where I'm planning to go.

Ok. This is what I'm looking at.
Kenwood KFC-C6893PS 6"x8" 3-way car speakers at Crutchfield.com
For the speakers in the front and rear.

Now I don't know about a Sub or Amp. I did see a video of looking for the right kind of amp. So I'm thinking, but correct me, maybe I should get 2 amps one for the four speakers and one for just the Sub if that is possible.

Pretty much any aftermarket speaker will suit your audio needs unless you are an audiophile obsessed with perfect sound. The reason I wanted you to list what speakers you were thinking of so I could see what type of amp you need to be looking for.

The question for the right amp is a tough one. As a general rule of thumb you want to power the speaker with more power than its rated. Since the speakers you are looking at can handle up to 80 watts RMS, I'd look for an amp that does about 100 watts RMS a channel. However since you are still unsure about a sub I'd hold off until you decide then you might be able to do a 5 channel amp keeping things simple (one power wire, one ground, etc).

As for a sub, if you are looking for something to give you some nice lows and thump away when your listening heavier, then two 10" subs run mono would be a good start.

your question is right up my alley as im in the process right now off rewiring the door speakers to 12ga., putting in a new hu (unfortunately it wasnt a direct fit and have to do some cutting), putting in some 12's behind my 3rd row until i can get my custom box made. my interior in my truck is pretty much out or loose so i can put in the navigation, and satelite.

all the info you have gotten is right. you should put what kinda budget your looking at and then you can really get some help as different people have used everything under the sun and swear by different brands. also are you audio inclined, can you install this all yourself or do you have to have someone do it? this will take a chunk out off your budget, but it is not the hard so dont let someone tell you some crazy price like 400 or something.

do not buy kenwood speakers, they suck. i noticed youpicked 3 ways, is that because you picked what came in the truck? you can put a different size speaker in, you just need the adapter plate (not expensive). do you like to hear the highs in your music, if so you want components (6.5's, require some modification - not hard). then your rear you can go coax - 6x8's or put another set of components there as well.

if your thinking of taking the 3rd row out you must be putting some 15's back there. if not they make a standard box that fits behind the 3rd row and you still have nice sound. im someone who likes to beat, so trust me it works. there may or may not be a slight rattle depending on what you like but some rammat could help(i havent put mine on yet so i cant say).

before you choose subs, know what you want. do you want 1 or 2 or more. do you want some thump, or just something to enhance your music. amps you can get a great amp for a decent price. dont get caught up into the rms numbers to much though, as these are perfect operating conditions at full power, and of course some of them pad there numbers. the best thing you can do is find a shop that has a enclosed sound booth so that you can get the full experience from the speaker with nothing else going on around you, or maybe listen to oneof your homies system to get an idea.

Crutchfield is a ripoff. They are way overpriced. My advice is to join a forum like caraudio.com. You can find links to way better deals and get advice from people who do this for a living. I have 1 15" Kicker L7 with a Kicker zx1500.1 on it, as well as Boston Acoustics SL-80's in all 4 doors, with a Kicker zx650.4 running them. Looks like this, except these pics were when the system was in my explorer.

How are you counting your rca's saying you have 6 sets, do you have a center speaker? I remember those days. That l7 requires that much air?

Yea crutchfield is way over priced, but they do have some basic information that is very useful and needed. To me it's a lot more user friendly than say 12 volt (were the info. is everywhere) but it doesn't have as much info.

Did you do your own install?

an update to help you out more

this was the diy i followed, but at the end my radio was sagging, and wasnt sitting right. he used the supplied radio frame, this didnt work well for me.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...n-install.html

if you go the double din route, i highly recommend you get the: Metra dash kit part #95-5818
it will prevent the sag as you will see in the pics.
