Charlie, they are air flow operated, not vacuum and you can still get way too much air in any of the mechanical secondary carburetors. When Ford used Carter carbs on their engines, the first ones had vacuum secondaries, later ones like the 63-65 Lincoln 430 had the standard Carter mechanical secondaries. Even those big torque monsters could bog when stomped from idle at a light, but usually ended up lighting the rear tires.

A well calibrated vacuum secondary system like the 390cfm Holleys you pictured, works very well, my own setup used the synchronising hose between the carbs so all 4 secondary barrels opened at once.

Um, I didn't see it mentioned anywhere and maybe missed it but the WCFB's came on Merc 312's using this manifold . A friend had one on a '57 Mercury(Meteor?) and guess what. It ran pretty dang good on the street in the Big Ol' Heavy Merc Sedan.

2x4's

hi, just get you a couple chrome edelbrock carbs with adaptors. block the secondarys and run progressive linkage like 2x2's. there's no such thing as over carb'ed, just under cam'd, not enough cube's, and undergeared.

PM me to remind me to look up the guy's name for you. I'm out in the barn and then heading straight to the Mtwc fair to work in one of the tents. I'll be back later tonight.
Thanks!

Lee Dombrowicki,
How we restore your carburetor and current pricing. is who (northern WI) Randy recommends as of now.
His guy who I referred people to back in the 2010 dated posts had a brain aneurism so he's not using him anymore. My buddy has a set of R1434 teapots at another new guy with the hopes that they turn out great.
