Transmission Questions

Hello Everyone,

I'm going to start a new thread to see if someone can help me.
The 3 speed transmission on my 52 F1 is locked up in 2nd gear as I reported before. At this point I've given up on getting it unstuck while it's in place. I want to remove it from the truck to either repair or replace. From the manual it says, I remove the seat, remove the carpets, remove the cover from the floorpan, support the engine and remove the trans up through the floor hole. What do I have to do about the clutch assembly? When and if I get it fixed is there a gasket of some sort to go between the trans and engine? Do I need some sort of clutch alignment tool to reinstall the trans? My engine is a non original early60's 223 if that helps. I just want to be sure I do not do more damage then is already done so that's why I'm asking so many questions.

Also any of you "darksiders" who have a good working 3 speed laying under a tarp and want to sell it let me know please.

Thanks so much.

Nope, there are no gaskets between the engine and transmission. The clutch will not be disturbed, either. The disk will stay aligned and firmly clamped between the flywheel and pressure plate. It really is just about as easy as what you've outlined. The only thing that you'll want to watch out for is making sure that the throwout bearing is in place and properly installed before you put the transmission back in.

Joes right on the money as it is pretty easy. IF you are able to get it unstuck and it's not the result of the gears having mashed together and broken, it would probably be a good idea to replace both front and rear oil seals as long as you have it out. That's REALLY easy too.

Do you know what transmission it is (the original 3 spd or the one that came on the motor ?) If you can tell us we can probably find you and exploded diagram of the insides.

Hint: usually buying another used transmission is lots cheaper than trying to buy the gears to fix one!

Before you go the trouble, did you pull the side cover off? I suspect this could be where your problems lie; it prevents going into two gears at once, but can hang up:

Well it got real hot and humid again so I have not been in the garage since Sunday. This is the side cover, it looks like I need to remove the shift levers before removing the cover, do the pins that hold these lever just drive out? It would be great to remove the cover and find something that could be fixed.

Thanks for all the replies as soon as its under 90 again I'll be back out there.

Here is a little bigger picture showing the lever and what looks to be some sort of brass pin holding it on.

You don't have to remove the levers, how did you get the one off?? It should take a vise and a BFH, lots of cussing and a lot of 90wt on your shirt. If it just slid off, that may be part of the problem.

Just undo the bolts on the cover and pull it straight out (DRAIN THE OIL FIRST!!). Keep track of which way the forks are facing!! (If you forget, I have it written down)

From the looks of it, the 2-3 lever may be too far forward (into 2nd).

no the lever is still there its just a shadow if you look at the top right of the picture that is the top of the lever. I took 4 or 5 pics and each one looked like it was missing.
I was sure you would need to remove them sure glad you stopped me!

Thanks

LOL, now I get it! It looks like maybe the R-1 lever is partway in 1st (to the rear). This is what they look like in neutral

Looking at that pic I would suspect a broken shift fork on the first-reverse lever. It should not be rotated that far clockwise.

I think you mean the 2-3 lever (front)? I agree, it looks pretty far around, but the angle makes it hard to say for sure.

Thanks everyone, the front lever is the only one that will move and I think in that picture it was moved forward. I am planning to get back into the garage hopefully tomorrow, its Africa hot here again, and I am not made for heat. Should I have the clutch in or out when I remove the cover? Does it matter? Also if I remove the transmission should the clutch be in or out? Right now I have the clutch in jammed down with a board against the front seat.

Thanks again for all the help.

It might be handy to have the clutch held down when you try to move the levers, but it probably wouldn't make a difference when trying to remove the side cover. If you pull the entire transmission out, then DO NOT have the pedal down! That would allow the disc to slip down out of alignment with the transmission input shaft after the transmission is free. Now that I think about it, you'll have to disconnect the clutch linkage to get it out anyway, so it wouldn't even be possible.
