89 Fuel system problems

Need some help!! Ok, I have a 89 F350, 460 with dual fuel tanks. I had a problem the other day with the truck dying while running on the front tank. I would switch to the rear tank and it would fire up and run fine at which time I would switch back to the front and it would continue to run. Then later in the day it did the same thing again. I was told it sounds like the selector valve. Does anyone know where this is located at and what it looks like? any help or suggestions please!

i doubt its the selector, either its out of gas and sending unit is saying the tanks full when its not, or front fuel pump is probably on its way out, or already there

+1 I would guess that intank delivery pump. Remember you have 1 in each tank plus 1 common high pressure pump.

If it ends up bein the selector, just follow the fuel lines off the back of the fuel filter and you will run into it in a foot or so. Its not hard to find, usually has a metal shield over it held on with 3 bolts. I just swapped mine out and truck runs like a champ, but mine would run on the rear tank and send fuel to the front. You might wanna do a little snoopin around before you try to replace the selector, its $125 from Ford.

I know its a full tank cause I just topped it off the other day. As far as the selector I did not see anything with a metal shield over it along the fuel lines. I found a canister looking object with two lines on one side and four on the other and what looked like a canister on the bottom. It looked more like the fuel water seperator on my old diesel truck. Would this have been the selector? What does this thing look like? Also can someone explain the pump set up to me? Is it correct that there is one pump in each tank and then a "common" pump? Where is this pump located?

here you go. Just dont take the bottom part off. this will explain how the fuel selector works http://www.stangler.com/motorsports/...FuelTankValve/ Ford calls this part a "dual function reservoir"

Ill add to what Larry said. There is a low pressure pump attached to each sending unit in each tank. They feed the selector valve Larry pictured. From the selector valve the fuel moves up to the filter then into the high pressure pump on the frame rail located about below your feet on the drivers side.

So where do you think I should start on this thing? The low pressure pump in the tank or the high pressure pump on the rail? Or is it possible that its the selector? Just trying to find a starting point.

I would go with this suggestion. Usually when the selector valve is going out the tanks start to fill each other resulting in overflow of gas. I cant remember if its the front tank or the back tank that overfills.
