2005 Expedition transmission = dead?
#31
Confused,
I assume that this is a dead thread, because the last post before yours was months ago. That being said, I am having the exact same problem with my 2005 Expedition with 120,000 miles. I bought the truck used. The previous owner had the transmission replaced, and for the first 20,000 miles after I got the truck it worked great. Then the 2-3 and 3-4 gear slippage started.
I am also having an issue while reversing. In reverse the truck wants to die (and sometimes does die). I thought this could possibly be related because it feels like a vacuum issue and I am under the impression that transmissions use vacuum levels to determine when to shift???
I am also having an issue with my starter, the teeth have significantly worn down on the engine side of the flywheel. I know that doesn't seem to be related, but here is a thread about a transmission problem where the flywheel moved in and out about 1/4 inch. It turned out that the thrust bearing had worn out.

Any information that you could share as to the resolution to your problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Mark,
Thank you for your reply. And thanks for setting me straight on the vacuum. I have been living under a rock for a while, I guess.
I have checked the fluid and the level is where it should be, both cold and hot. Also the fluid looks pretty good, in my opinion, still pretty red not too dirty
Thanks.

Does anyone have the part numbers for the gaskets that go on the valve body? I haven't taken mine apart, but looking at some youtube videos there can be up to 2. The first one between the valve body and transmission and the second in the actual valve body after you take off the top plate. I have the part number for the retainer which is F2VY*7384*B, but I need to make sure I get the right gaskets.

i took mine apart today and found the broken clip but it was not jammed in the valve body. I didn't notice anything else wrong but replaced the clip. My car would go to neutral from 2nd to 3rd when overdrive was on. any other ideas what might be causing it with just the broken clip be enough to cause that problem? The clip wasn't completely broken off, but the broken piece was just sitting on top of the valve body.
I did notice when the valve body came off the part in this picture below came off. I put it back on because its just a spring and the cover seems likes its held on with the valvebody, but thats the only thing I noticed other than the partially broken clip.

When the clip or snap ring breaks and pieces jam the valve the symptom is a neutral when shifting from 3rd to 4th not 2nd to 3rd.
That is going to be a different kind of failure and its related to the direct drum.
Your transmission will have to be removed and more than likely have to be rebuilt.
