Thumbs up Another Of Sarges' Threads

First off I just read that serp. belt thread all I have to say is OMG, Mark no more bling for your truck...mine either I guess

Ok back to reality, Me and the truck went for a run down to RI to pick up another truck, about 250 miles one way. This is the first time I towed heavy with the DD so here are some real world numbers for you.

The truck I picked up was a 87 GMC K3500, the truck bed was filled with parts, the 06 was filled with parts, came across the scales at just under 10k. There were some steep grades to climb the outside temp was 85* and about 80% humidity, not sure if that makes a difference. I ha the A/C set at 72*, fan speed was 2. I ws running Innovatives Tow/Brake Tune, not happy with the tranny shifts on hard accel I wont use it agin til I talk to Eric.

Heres what I saw:

I averaged 194* ECT 200* EOT The hottest it got was 208* ECT 218* EOT. There was a short stint on a steep grade where it was 13* apart I'd say a minuite.

EGT's stayed around 975 when climbing grades, I hit 1000 a few times, short burts. Again I averaged about 800-875.

Trans temp. stayed at 168* and the highest I saw was 182*, so the nay sayers that dont like deep sump pans, I have to say mine works well.

Boost averaged about 18-23 psi, I did see around 32 psi once or twice. I did pull over to check straps, took a peak under the hood, no puking, fluids all stayed in check.

It was a great trip, its been a while since I towed that heavy, and I a whooped, did the trip in 1 day, left at 5:30 am pulled into the shop at 2:00 pm.

I was able to keep 60 mph on even the steep grades, with ease, I had no issues, so I am happy.

I used about 1/4 tank of fuel on the way home, so I would say I was still averaging 12-14 mpg with the load.

I have to say that this truck amazes me everytime I use it. I am glad I came back to the 6.0 and didnt shy away. The only complaint I have is that I should have bought a dually...maybe next time.

SO the reason for the K truck before I get flamed, is my brother was going to help me restore my other truck "zues" cause he loved the Fall Guy. Unfortunately he passed last year in a car accident and I am obligated to build this thing. Heres a pic. of the curent truck, and thanks for listening to me ramble.

Yeah its not easy, everytime I look at that truck I think about him.

I was looking for Marks thread about the average temps, I am thinking I amy need to replace my T-stat, cause I was in the 180's more often than not?

I changed the oil in my truck today, which lead me to clean under the hood with simple green, which lead me to wash the hole truck this evening.

It looks like a jewel or dare I say... Bling!

Hey boss, not to hijack this thread, but npccpartsman (Tim) has been turning wrenchs on my truck while I'm deployed, and he's been shocked at the amount of corrosion under my hood. The radiator was so bad, he almost pulled it and had it pressure tested.. Aluminum parts, and electrical connectors were also seeing unusual buildup. I guess they cleaned up OK, though. There seemed to be no explanation...the truck only has 57K and it's never seen salted roads. He talked to a lot of people and the only thing we came up with was that I use simple green to clean under the hood. Just throwing it out there.

Great post - several knowledgeable folks have specifically warned against using simple green UNLESS it is completely rinsed off.

Even the simple green website says that the aklinity of simple green can accelerate the normal corrosion you get from aluminum & water. Thus it says not to allow simple green to sit on bare aluminum for more than 10 minutes.

Yeah, and I'm pretty meticulous with stuff, especially cleaning...it's not like I sprayed on there, spit on it, and called it good. Works great on tires and floor mats, though!

Jake, your a brave man....... for letting Tim work on your truck I use Gunk Engine Brite and have not noticed any problems.

The Fall Guy, what a show. I had a 1977 two tone brown and tan truck, 4 inch lift with white wagon wheels and a double roll bar long bed.
So when the show aired originally in 1980 everyone thought I copied the GMC... Colt was funny to watch, one show would air a single
head light short bed, then a double head light long bed. The jump truck would split the front axle, in the next scene drive away...Halarious but
Heather Thomas was worth watching...

Good Luck on the project Andy
