Considering a '98 Expedition, have choice of two, one with the larger 5.4 v-8, one with the smaller 4.6. The smaller engine Expedition is $1,300.00 cheaper. Both trucks same color, same options, miles, everything.
Will I notice a big difference in everyday driving with the smaller engine?
Is there any gas mileage difference between the two?
Will I grow bored driving the 4.6 vs the 5.4 after awhile?
HELP / I am buying one or the other in the MORNING!
Paul,
I bought a 99 E.B.,on saturday night, with the 5.4 in it. There is only one word to discribe the power difference between the 5.4 and 4.6 UNBELIEVABLE!! My friend had a F150 with 4.6 and compared to the 5.4 it was a slug.
In regards to the mileage, it is an Expedition, right? YOu should average 12-17 miles regardless i think. My average mileage right now is 14.5 but I have not been on the freeway but twice for a total of 20 miles.
whatever you decide you won't be unhappy. Good luck and Enjoy.
Jeff

Both are good engines but I would prefer the 5.4 engine. My brother's Expi has a 4.6 and it is not bad at all but when I purchased my 99', the power difference was noticable. I like the power of the 5.4

Do you know what rear end you have? I've got a 99 5.4 with trailer package and air adjustable suspension in the rear and my mileage is miserable. 13.4! I know it's heavy, but before I decided to buy, I rented a 2000 XLT 4WD and it got 17.3 on the freeway at 75-85mph. How can a 4x4 get better mileage than a 2wd!
I'm not a rookie, I have a 74 K5 Blazer that I bought new so I understand 13mpg. But I expected it with a nonefficient smog motor and 4WD. This expedition is headed for someone elses driveway if I can't get this mileage thing figured out.
I know I could have miscalculated the mileage on the 4X4 but I had the wife take care of it because mileage was her objection to the expedition. Trust me, she was very accurate in her calculation. If she could have found a reason not to buy, she would have!
cfp12, I see ~17 MPG on the highway in my 98 5.4L 4WD w/ 3.73 LS, more if I use 93 octane. It's more like 13-14 MPG around town. I was only seeing around 15.5 MPG highway / 11-12 MPG city before a recent tune-up at 57k.
Jeff, Are you looking for the brackets that hold up the rear seat for added storage/cargo space? I have not purchased any yet. I do want to get them. I have a mini-ratchet strap that holds the seat well at the moment. I saw a source on one of the Expi threads but that was some time ago. I believe that they were in the $40.00 range. Good luck. Jake.

If you are interested in brackets that hold up the rear seat, there is a guy out of San Clemente Ca. that sells them on e-bay. They usually go for around $25. Look under Expedition/parts and accessories.
I would be thrilled with that kind of mileage! This is the second time I have heard that higher octane gas seems to increase the MPG. Maybe I'll give that a try. Does anyone know where I can get a list to interperate the VIN? I'd sure like to find out what rear end I have.
Hey guy's'
sorry I haven't gotten back yet. Been real busy.
As far as mileage goes we are now up to an average of 14 city if I keep my foot out of it, and 16-17 on the freeway. I don't know what rearend I have but I would assume the 3.73. It also has the air suspension and bells and whistles.
as far as the seat mounts, I would love a set. I did go to e-bay one time and saw them there. I am a little leary of the place yet and didn't buy them. Now I wish I had. If any body finds some maybe we could do a group purchase through the web site? Keep me posted.
I just bought a 99 XLT with the 4.6 w/ 51k on the clock. The previous owner (2nd) had it less than a year after buying it off lease at 45k. Prefers his MB 500 SL apparently... It is in impeccible shape. So far so good.
In the trip from Philly to Maine, up the Garden State Parking Lot in NJ and then the New England Thruway up the Catskills and Berkshiers, I STILL pulled down 16mpg. Went 445 miles (Philly to Sanford Maine) before tanking up. I figure on a leisurely jaunt without the mountains and traffic, I ought to better that. But still, 16mpg is not bad for a vehicle of this size and girth. Around town, my wife just filled the tank and we had about 380 miles on the trip odo with under 1/4 of a tank left.
I have done nothing to it yet but it definitely could use more power. A K&N, probably a MAS and I have given some though to the TBI spacer... I don't want to chip it as all the chip programs require premium gas. But if I can pick up 10 or 15 more ponies with those few mods, that will go a long way to helping this one out.
