have question on 4.6

I am looking to replace the 4.6 in a '97 F150. I am going to the wrecking yard to pull an engine to overhaul before swapping. What type/years of vehicles(cars and trucks) can I pull one from? Thank You

you can take any modular V8 from any of ford vehicle that shares the same transmission.

remember, if its not the same exact vehicle, you need the PCM and complete harness too.

Thank you. So what is the thing about the Romeo or Windsor engines? I am wanting to replace the engine in a '97 F150 w/4.6. Can I just pull one from a crown vic? I dont want to waste money on something that will not work. As for the wiring, pcm, cant I just use the one already in the truck?
I dont know enough about the differences of mod motors(engines). I know more about the earlier Ford engines than these. Thanks for any help.

is there some reason you don't want to overhaul the engine you already have? no hassling with harnesses and such.

well avator, its almost always cheaper to replace the motor.

romeo vs windsor: windsor is a 4 bolt main. a bunch of other little things.

if you find a 97/98 f150 4.6, all you need is the motor. if you find anything else, you need the PCM(computer). a PCM from a 97 f150 4.6 will only work with a motor from a 97 f150 4.6. you can take a 4.6/5.4 out of a 97-03 f150 or expedition, but you need the PCM and harness too. and they need to share the same transmission.

91-92 use a 5.0 trans and two bolt starters, won't bolt up to your trans, not sure on the 93. I'd stick with 94-98 to play it safe. 99 & up use PI heads, ok to use as long as you're using the intake that's matched to the PI heads. Windsor blocks have 13 valve cover bolts and use two different crank shafts. One takes a six bolt flywheel and the other takes an eight, no way to know on the crank unless you pull the trans. Romeos all had 11 valve cover bolts and six bolt cranks. Also hear you have to pay attention to the oil filter location and if you can run a remote oil filter, not poss. on that one but I'd be carefull when looking unless you don't care. I'd stick with with what-ever you have in there now (Romeo or Windsor) but my truck came with a Windsor and now has a Romeo. I prefer the Romeo over the Windsor myself. Romeos have stud plates over the cams and I think the main cap set-up on the Romeo is better over the Windsor block. Good luck. P.S. also beware of front wheel drive engines, I hear they lack motor mount bolt holes on one side of the block and will not bolt up to your trans.
