engine sounds fine, but no power?

Ive been lurking around this forum for some time and looking at all these beautiful beasts of trucks has forced me to fix up my parents old 79 f100 thats been sitting for about 7 years.

The truck starts fine but idles a little rough, i chalked it up to sitting for so long. My main concern though is that there isnt any power when i hit the gas, it just chugs and chugs, i cant get over 25mph.... Ive been searching around but i cant really find anything about this. I just pulled the tanks and cleaned them, did the spark plugs and im about to put on the new carb. But if that doesnt work i dont know what to do next. Valves? Rings? Main bearings? (hopefully not)

Its a stock (for now) 302 rebuilt about 20 years ago if that helps at all.

So my question to the kind people of FTE is... What are the most common problems for lack of power like this? Any and all advice would be much appreciated.

See what happens after the new carb is on. Old one is prolly sucking air from old gaskets and plugged with varnish and like that. Are the brakes dragging? Is it hitting on all 8? Whats the compression? Stuck valves, Rings? Do you got smoke. WOW i better say do you got smoke out the tail pipe or the pot heads will be calling ya.

Haha... Ya i got smoke... and the tail pipe is spitting some too . Only kidding, ha! But ya there was smoke. My dad had a compression check done right before it was parked but i cant remember what the results were, im sure it wasnt good, ill have to ask him. We did the brakes a few years ago, so they shouldnt be a problem. Everything is firing fine as far as i know.

Im just trying to get some second opinions, gain some knowledge and whatnot

See how it runs with the new carb. If okay, fine. If not, first check your timing. Retarded timing will cause a no power condition, then run a compression check. If compression is bad in some cylinders those issues will need to be addressed. Check for stuck valves and/or bent pushrods. If compression is good and even (20% max difference between highest and lowest cylinder) start doing normal trouble shooting. Check for vacuum leaks including the brake booster (if power brakes) and under the dash (if factory A/C).

if you still have the same problems with the new carb, you might have buildup in the intake runners and in the heads from it sittn for that long. Dirtdoggers and other flying pests love places like that. Might have to blow them out and new valve seals most likely. possibly gummed up fuel lines also. thats what id check first.

mine was doin the same thing when i first got it 3 years ago. i just stomped the gas down a couple times and spun a few donuts and everything cleared fine. i also put new plugs and cleaned the carb out afterward. gotta blow the carbon out from time to time lol
