I have found some of the infamous bubbling paint on the rear lift gate of our 07 Exp. I did some research on the internet and have come to learn this is a huge problem. I am still under warranty so I will be calling the dealer today. Anyone else had this problem?

 

Yep, the old bubling paint. The paint warranty is 12 months or 12,000miles for defects, and 5/60 for rust that has eaten through the metal. You probrably fall in between like 99% of people with this problem. Can you post some pictures of the problem? I would still talk to your dealer. If they are nice they may fix it.

 

already had mine fixed, but it looks like it's trying to it again.

if you are outside the 12k/12 months...you have to wait for the paint to rust through usually for the corrosion warranty to be in effect.

This has been going on with Ford for a while. I assume it tied to cost savings. They just don't paint/prep the trucks/cars like they used too. This is why a visual inspection is so important before you buy.

 

I can say from past personal experience. That it, (paint pop outside of Ford) does happen. A guy I know put his 69 Chevy away for the winter last year. Looked great, paint was 3 months old. and over the winter decided to sell it. Advertised in storage, fresh paint. LOL a buyer, cashin hand ($15000.00) talks to him, then says he wants to see it as is dotntouch it, clean it, or anything. LOL ( I have to laugh cuz I can picture his and his wifes faces) SO the guy comes over, they talk, then he goes back to the storage garage he has. Turn on the lights, and very maticulously starts un covering this master peice LOL.

His wife screams... it has acne

The sale was blown, and he had to repaint it.

The cause if Chemical pop or paint pop is simply a chemical interaction between the primer or sealer, and Paint.

 

is the rear hatch aluminum?

I know the hoods on the F-150 and Expy are aluminum...and so is the one for my Mustang.



Seeing as the hoods are so prone to these problems, it makes me wonder if the rear hatch is aluminum as well

As soon as I got home from work my wife dragged me off the state fair with the kids. We didn't get back until 1030 last night. I will post them as soon as I get home from work. They are just small paint blisters. Just like the Ford pickups get over the rear wheel wells before they rust out. Each blaster is rather small but there is many of them. Lets call it poison ivy of the paint.

 

Yes the rear hatch and the hood are aluminum.

 

How big of an area is this a problem in?

 

On the rear lift gate its about the size of a half dollar. I actually found another patch starting on the front lip of the hood. We have a couple of Expys here at work and one of them has multiple patches of it on the rear lift gate.

 

I would for sure bring this up to the dealer. If it was one small bubble, I would say pop it, primer it and use some touch up paint, but this is a whole nother ball game.

 

There is different theories on what causes this. The Ford lab guys say it is caused by iron contaminents on the aluminum prior to beprimed and sealed. Or as mustang said it is a chemical pop from a reaction between the sealer, primer, paint etc.... Either way Ford should repair all of these cases, especially for the amount of $$$ we pay for these trucks.
