That is the stock gear for 1948-1960 regular 3 speed ford truck trans.

There were two types, one was cast iron with an iron gear, the other was steel with a fiber gear.
The plastic gear is an aftermarket replacement.
In 1960, Ford came out with a different design. These driven gears are nylon, look totally different than the earlier gears, are available with 16 thru 21 teeth, are EZ to find...as they are still used today.
The shafts of these gears came in three different lengths. On one of the gears (DOOZ17271A), the shaft is no more than 1/4" long.
The link in post #3 shows one of these 1960 and later gears, and the clip used to retain it.
Thanks, that's great news! At the very end of my cable I used two adjustable wrenches and twisted in opposite directions so as to create an interference fit in the gear, not too much or it will just compress the inner cable. Then I used your method with the jb weld. So far so good.
