Question Wiring in a Tach

In my '88 F150 theres no tach cause its an auto but i like to see how bad i'm beating on her. So the wire on the tach goes to what wire on the coil or is there another wire it goes too.

Get a factory tach and it'll probably drop into your cluster. Or get a tach cluster from eBay - it'll DEFINITELY plug into your harness. A Haynes manual shows how to hook it up.

Wiring in a Tach

The (usually) green wire from the tach goes to the negative side of the coil.....the tan with yellow stripe wire.

Wiring in a Tach

Hey thanks i went out and picked up a gauge clauster with a tach for $30. From what i seen it will plug right in. Then i looked at the gear selector and it didn't have one. So i think i will see if can switch it from the other one u think that will work. If it doesn't i was just gonna get a b&m shifter and mount it in so i won't need the selector. So you think i could switch it or just put at other shifter in?

If I remember right there are just 2 screws that hold the shift indicator to the cluster. It should fit right in.

It drops right in. That gear selector if VERY fragile so be careful. It just swaps right in.

I used a factory tach for a while until I found out how inaccurate it was and went with an 8000RPM 5" AutoMeter mounted on that right side of the dash that slopes down by the A/C controls.

Your part throttle shifts are probably like 2000-2400 and WOT is a laughabaly (sp?) low 4500RPM. Mainly since the factory cam is very, very tiny.

Steve83, my truck doesn't have a tach, never did. You said get a factory tach or a gage cluster with a tach, is the wiring all ready in the dash and tach ready? this would be a stock looking up grade. thanks

Charlie
Yes, for '87-up. For older trucks, it takes more effort, but it's still not very hard.

I have a 1988 ford that I just hooked a auto meter tach up too and almost everything works...everything that doesn't really matter. I have lights to it and can dim it. When the ignition is turned on it jumps to zero and when it is running the pointer sits at zero and dosn't ever move. What could my problem be?

I'd start by looking at your wiring, If you own a 5.0L i'd look at the green wire with the gold tracer on the ngative side of the coil and make sure your green wire from your tach is hooked to that wire... If you own a 4.9/5.8 it should be similar so hope this helps
