That is a great pic of a new truck. It confirms some things I have discovered a while back. Please note the side mirrors, they are not the little chrome ones that the catalogs say are original, and look at the hubcaps, although they are dirty you can see they are painted not stainless.

About the gas cap: I have literature that says gas caps were black, but I was not sure if that was for F-350' and up or for all trucks. The vintage pics I have from Ford Truck Clues and dealer pics are not clear enough to show for sure. So is the gas cap missing or is it painted black??

Great pic though isn't it. I wish I had one of my truck when my grandfather had it and used it as a work truck on his dairy farm...

 

I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with that observation. The layer of grime visible on the door is thick enough to conceal any shine on the hubcaps.

Just guessing, but it looks like he just gassed it up from the farm tank (one of those elevated gravity tanks) and slopped it all over.

I had a '53 in college, it was likewise a farm truck, I was the 3rd owner and it had painted hubcaps. Couldn't swear it had the original gas cap but it was chrome as you can see.

 

Oh, I know for a fact the hubcaps on 53-56 F-100's were painted argent (silver) and had the FORD letters painted red.

My truck which I bought from my grandfather in 1977 (and he bought it new) had a chrome gas cap.

About the truck in question: there is a gas tank behind the truck and it looks like the runningboard could have had gas or another fluid wash away some dirt....

 

I just ran across this one on the HAMB. People just had more pride about themselves and their work way back when.

 

I put that on the desk top Doc. The Boy's will love it. And I want one.

That second pick would be a converstation piece for sure! Could you imagine the sound inside the truck!? How about the hole out the otherside????

 

I think more people just "had jobs" back then lol.

 

I'll bet right after WW2 people just became accustomed to wearing uniforms etc. I can remember that in the early 50's for sure. Even the Texaco guys had uniforms/hats etc.. And they weren't the only ones.
It was pretty common. It was the next step up in marketing I guess.

Oh I agree. People back then just had so much more motivation and discipline. And YES, they made sure they had a job. I've said this for a while, but if this country got into a true knock down drag out fight like WWII now, we'd fall apart at the seams.
