my first 4.9L rebuild

so my bro in law and i have started tearing into his 4.9 and we're wanting to get a little more power and fuel economyout of it. so far we've decide to put a comp cams cam in it most likely and boring it .030 over. gonna do an electric fan. maybe a t body. would the t body be necessary for this small of a build? what compression ratio are the 4.9s in 95? by the look of the pistons and combustion chambers it doesn't look like it could be much...... also what pistons and cam do you recommend to run? i think this thing needs at least 9:1 compression ratio. thanks in advance for any help!

i would leave the t body be on this honestly. have you considered a good port and polish on the head.? ive heard this little mod works wonders. the 300 can also unleash its inner beast once you let it breath. do a decent exhaust and ditch those two restrictive cats on there.

The combustion chamber on the EFI head won't stand much if any polishing as this screws up the fast-burn characteristic of the EFI head. Port runners can be cleaned up a little though. A 3-angle valve job and a 30* back cut on the intake valves doesn't hurt a thing.

IIRC Isky has two cams that are computer compatible. Do a search in their catalog for them.

Hypereutectic pistons are better than stock cast pistons for very little more $$ and are available in stock configuration.

ok on the t body. i didn't really think it needed it either. a p and p requires a little more time and effort than we're wanting to put into it i think. what kind of muffler do you recommend, preferably one that won't make it sound like total crap! and as far as the cats we live in an emission controlled county so we have to keep them unfortunately

what kind of money are we talkin about for the Isky cam? was considering a comp and they're about 140. would you not recommend running flat tops? all that i can find on those are flat tops with no valve reliefs. is that too much? what's the compression on stock ones? i've read 7.8 on older and 8.8 on efi. they can't have that much as the combustion chambers and dishes are massive on these engines! we are gonna get the head reworked but not sure on the 3 angle. would probably be a good idea but we are already almost at $600 for the machine work on the block and head work cleaning installing cam bearings and installing pistons on rods.....

Summit, JEGS, etc., will probably net one the best price on the cam...unless you find a NIB one on eBay for less.
