I would be surprised if very many of you have as severe operating conditions as I do - both trailers that I tow weigh around 11,000 lbs.

I go from the high country of northern Arizona, west across the Mojave desert - this involves changes in altitudes of over 6,000 ft near Seligman, to the brutal heat of the Needles area - involving long steady up-hill grades.

I have yet to have either the water or trans. oil temp. gauges move.

I take that back - when we first got the vehicle, an oil line failed (Monday Morning Production ?) because someone hadnt put a clamp on the oil cooler line, and it blew off, causing a rather sudden and dramatic over-temp. and obvious failure. So I know those guages work ! (FoMoCo. "ate" about a five grand bill from my dealer)

So - again, not clear why you'd want to mess with the obviously more-than-adequate stock tranny oil cooling system
This is what I know about my factory gauge. Last November, I was pulling an 8x16 fish house for 200 miles. It was about 13' high and had lots of wind resistance. At one point my Scan Gauge 11 read 228 degrees, yet my factory gauge never budged. I think most agree that anything over 220 can cause damage and or shorten the fluid life. Had I been going by the factory gauge, I would have thought all was well.

There seems to be some discrepancy on what temp is too hot. I believe Mark has stated that 220 is the danger zone. My vehicle will run 175-180 unloaded according to my scan gauge and gains about 15 degrees when the trailer is added on flat terrain.

Towed Trans Temps

I did a bit over 400 miles last week towing the TT over to Choke Canyon. It is mostly flat but with some small hills.

The new 31 row Cooler is AWESOME!!!! It was 98 to 101 degrees and I never saw the Trans temp go above 175. Most of the time it was at 168 or less even though the engine oil was up to 215 at times when moving up the longer hills.

I can diffently say that my Trans Temp now runs 75 degrees over ambient when the outside tmeps are between 80 and 100 degrees.

WOW!!
That's great to hear. Can you explain your trans cooling set-up? (you might've already - but just as a re-cap)

In answer to the original ?... Just installed a kit from Jegs. It's sold under their own name & is the biggest they offer - rated at 30,000 gvw. Much cheaper that the factory model ( $65 shipped) , but does take some bracketry and line cutting. Don't care much for those little zip tie things, but could be used if you don't want try fabricating brackets. I pulled the grill and was able to get it up close to the AC condenser. Plan on buying another 3-4 feet of tranny hose and a flairing tool as the one supplied doesn't fit. Takes a few hours, but I expect it will be a help here in AZ.

Best of luck no matter which way you choose.

Can anyone tell by looking at the link below if this would be the 26 or 31 row cooler?

MRAD - The cost of that cooler leads me to believe it is the 26 row version. (it's just too inexpensive to be the larger 31 row one.)

Tor. D> - Yep you were right on. I do love this cooling set up.

Grec-O-Face - The set-up has been descirbed elsewhere on the forums and if you search you will likely find several threads that will have information. I just swapped out (unbolt old one and bolt up new one) the old 9 pass cooler for the 31 pass cooler.

I also installed a Microfine filter in the flexible cooling line as has been reccomended by some. I did not use any fancy "fittings" but got 5 to 6 feet of 1/2" tranny hose from NAPA, cut it to length and spliced the existing 3/8" hose to the 1/2" hose with barbed brass reducer couplings and SS hose clamps. Check here for all the details and pics:

This How to Install You're 6.0 Trans Cooler -My Detailed Write-UP - Powerstroke Nation

It's not a difficult install and takes 2 to 4 hours. I spent less than $300 on the whole set-up. Much cheaper than a Transmission overhaul!!!!

Ok Guys so how much does one of these coolers cost and what is the best way to measure transmission temps? Someone said something about reading the internal temp sensor? I looked in the shop manual and did not find a PCM input for the trans temp.

I have a 2000 with the small cooler. According to the TSB there was an upgrade that passed the fluid through the bottom of the radiator and then into the cooler.

In the newer trucks, the trans fluid flowed from the trans to the radiator to the little cooler you have and back to the trans. You might not have that radiator cooler. You can get the 6.0L trans cooler and replace the little one you have with it.

Yeah that is what I was thinking. Do the newer trucks just use the 6.0 cooler and not the radiator one? Yeah I have the small cooler and no pass through the radiator. Again how much do these things cost?

Thanks

Newer trucks used the radiator cooler and the little thing. Some of us have changed to the 6.0 cooler . To retrofit that, you'd have to probably get a new radiator at least. I'd just stick the 6.0 cooler on it and be done.
