Painting 88 F-150

this is my truck and in a couple of months i am going to paint it using dupli colors paint shop lacquer paint that comes pre mixed in the qt cans

and i really dont know how much i need i was figuring about a gallon and a half (6qt) of both the paint and clear and and about 4 cans of filler primer

any ways... what im asking is if id be short on paint or clear?

ill be painting it in a couple months after i purchase a 92-96 front end so im trying to get a estimate on how much cash i need to save

Don't do it. It will be really hard to make that paint look good, and if you can find a way to make it look good, it won't last. You'd be better off with any budget paint that uses a hardener. I'm sure you can find a hardened paint for the price of the dupli-color, maybe even less.

I'll have to agree. I painted two vehicles with it, and went to a single stage acrylic enamel. Much better job. And cheaper. Cost me $300 for a gallon of primer, color and all hardeners, reducers. You'll have that much in the Duplicolor. And the enamel lays down much easier.

Best advise I can give you is find your local auto paint supply store. You can compare prices, colors and usually get sound advise. Those seem to be metallic colors which are just a little harder to shoot. Single stage with them and you won't be able to sand, where with BC/CC, your clear is where you'll color sand and buff out.

lol im not going to use single stage.... its going to get clear coat...

color sanding and buffing isnt a big deal... i just want a good paint that will last 2 or 3 years and isnt going to cost me an arm and a leg

ill go to a local paint shop and see what colors they got... i dont remember the exact brand of paint they sell but it wasnt bad... painted my dads 86 with a single stage custom yellow it turned out pretty good...

my truck isnt going to be a show truck but it isnt a work truck either...

lol but thanks for the info

how much does ppg cost per gallon?

Take a look here:

TCP Global - Quality & Service Since 1974

Summit racing sell paint as well.

Local auto parts store.. most have PPG and there lower tear paint Omni as well. House of Kolor is good

I would like to try the Summit brand paint as I like the " Black Cherry Pearl " and Im kind of itching to buy some and shoot it just to see how it looks and sprays. LOL

lol i was looking at summit just a few hours ago... their price is actually pretty reasonable so i may go with them... i want to use a gray like is on the truck because it looks good in the jams...

but i may have to go with another color because the candy apple they sell doesnt look like the candy apple from duplicolor sooo idk...

whats ur alls opinions on colors?

should i go with 1 solid or 2 tone it

If you find a PPG dealer local go with Omni MBC basecoat or Shopline JB basecoat, same thing. They run about $100 a gallon and reduce 1:1, so a gal gets you 2 sprayable. You won't be able to get a candy color, but the dupli color isn't a true candy unless it has a basecoat and a tinted midcoat. You can do the same thing with Omni, but the expense goes up along with the difficulty. You'd be better off finding a pearl red that is close to what you want instead. As far as going 2 tone or single, I always thought those 2 tones on the 80's fords looked good. It will add an extra expense though, as red is the most expensive color. If you did your second color a different non-red shade color it would most likely be the same cost as if you did it all one color. Plus, painting a 2 tone is easy with base clear.

i just ordered the SSU dark candy apple red metallic from Summit. you clear coat it
thinking about the Wimbledon white for the center section, or all one color, I'm not sure either.

Omni in red is cheaper ,but you may need 2-3 times as much if you used a quality finish (been there) (got tired of walking around the truck 8-10 times to hide)..A good clear will help it last as long as possible (U-V protection)

Yeah, unfortunately with cheap paint comes lack of coverage. Omni Plus is a huge jump in quality without a big jump in price. It is a bit more than MBC but the colors are a lot better looking and far better coverage.
