An inverter will work but you need to double the watts listed on the nameplate of the motored device you want to run because of the locked rotor amp draw. It takes a whole lot of power to start an air compressor that already has say 85psi in the tank but the pressure switch says it's time to recharge. Makes a really big inverter necessary. The positive benefit to an inverter is you have 120v for other uses too.

So does the OEM size belt with dual altnators work with this air compressor in its place or do you need a special size belt to fit?

I'm liking the idea of a belt driven air compressor.... just wondering about installing and how much fabrication is needed.

I have to admit, that setup is pretty darn cool. I just might have to call Clay......

hey guys i've also been looking for over a month now researching on board air sys and cant decide which way is the best route (elec compressor or belt driven), the one that riff raff sells i've seen on another web site and looks great and riff raff is cheaper but the price on the brackets is higher than giraffe's a$$, the one ampslw showed us (vmac) is a very nice set up but looks out of my price range ( can't find pricing ), that compressor is an 70cfm on demand compressor (rotary screw) with engine controling to idle the engine up when there is a demand. i'm going to try post some links to both never tried hope it works, i guess it just comes down to what you really and truly need air for. bracket link. Anyone have any thoughts as to what model and type to buy for a 2000 F250 7.3L / crew cab /short bed.

Saw this and even though it's older. I am attempting the same thing and ran into an old guy who simply took a truck compressor machined the shaft to fit the factory a/c clutch and simply mounted it in place of the a/c. He had a one gallon tank inside the hood on the passenger fender. The trick to using tools is the tank. Obviously no one want a 5000 dollar screw compressor. It's not economical for the weekend warrior wallet. But to run off one Tire you can wait for the tank to fill a few times. Another option is a 12v. But you still need the tank.

Clay's compressor

Has anyone run one of these? Curious about the HP draw and especially if they affect the HP in any real way

If you can fab brackets a York a/c compressor is cheap from older Chevy van. Scout a semi salvage yard and get 1 of there air brake tanks. Have line made and it will work its butt off. In the rock crawling dayZ this how friends did it. I have a York I never built in the garage. Or use a nitrogen air tank, size of a large fire extinguisher.
