Can anyone help with 9" & van housing?

I would like to build a disc brake rear axle for my 80 Ford E100 wheelchair van. Can anyone direct me to what rear end to start with. Vans are 68" axel to axel! I don't know my trucks well enough to know what to look for to start with. Starting with a 68" van housing would be easiest , I think. I would like the thickest housing with 31 spline axels and 5 x 5 1/2" van bolt pattern, any thoughts on what years to look for?

Many thanks!

Let me know what you might need. If you need a housing, I have one in a 78 club van with 3.50 ratio and 28 spline axles. Will also be heading your way in about 2 weeks (Whidby island) OBCB

My 78 E150 has a 31spline rear axle, 2.75 gears. 6100lb GVW IIRC.

Is there a way to tell 28 from 31 splines while in the van, axle tag?

Thanks

Typically- while not always accurate- If it's a big bearing housing (no necked down area at the end of the axle tubes) it'll be a 31spline.

housing

Were there specific years or other criteria that large bearings were used?

Thanks for the help!
