New guy 2000 7.3l

Well, here's the new ride. Has 280k on the odometer, has been very well taken care of. The lift and tires are new. Mods include a k&n drop in,diablo sport chip, and gauges.

Anything i should be looking for with a high mileage truck??

Welcome to FTE. Nice looking truck.

Maintenance is key with these things. Regular oil changes, fuel filter, transmission and coolant service regularly.

Beyond that, just keepin ontop of the things it might need. Lifted trucks (mostly the big, heavy tires) put more stress on things like balljoints and U joints.

Most here are going to tell you to get rid of that K&N filter and go with some custom tuning.

What or where would be a good place to get a good tune? And what is a good exhaust?

Also,what involves "coolant service"?

Welcome to the forum. There are certainly a bunch of friendly, knowledgeable people around here.

Just to elaborate on what Lisa said, the K&N filters have been reported to allow small particles of dust through them that will kill a diesel engine. Has something to do with the turbo pulling more air through them.

"Coolant service" consists of draining and replacing the coolant to keep it fresh. I have not seen anyone recommend changing the coolant more than once each year.

There are several good exhaust systems. Riffraff Diesel has several that will fit your truck. Most will recommend at least a 4 inch turbo back exhaust. It will allow your truck to get rid of burnt fuel efficiently and lower your exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs). Because of limitations in the turbo, the 5 inch exhaust is only slightly more efficient, but a whole lot harder to install. Some like the sound of the 5 inch.

Enjoy your truck, and again, welcome to the family.

most people around here have jody tune their trucks (dp-tuner) they are really good folks... do not get any canned tuners they have some adverse side effects occasionally, also get rid of the k&n and get a 6637 it will be a good idea and its cheap if you are close to tn Riff raff is having an event near Knoxville and he has the 6637 kits.... Both Jody and Clay (RRDP) are really good guys and will hook you up

Welcome. Someone has spent some $$ on that truck. Little exterior mods to make it look a little newer. Looks really nice and clean. Not gonna jump in on anything else at this time. There are a bunch of knowledgeable people on here and everyone is willing to assist.

its an intake mod that uses a napa 6637 filter that is massive, it filters out alot better than a k&n along with that Clay at riff raff diesels comes with a filter cover and all of the other stuff needed to put it together.... Check it out it is similiar to a tymar kit and Clay is a stand up guy that will help you if help is needed

As for the white smoke, possibly glow plugs or glow plug relay(gpr) since its just on startup, could be a leaking injector O-ring.

I've been doing some searching on the site, the 6637 mod and ccv mod look relatively easy and will be my next steps!

How does one figure out if it's the glow plugs,or gpr,or o-ring? Would a rookie like myself to diesel be better off taking it to someone?

Welcome to FTE! Nice looking rig! Why take it to some one else when you have the most knowledgeable group of people here to walk you thing at all?

The easiest way to begin testing the GPR is to 1: install a 12V LED to it to see if and when it is energizing. 2: Jump out the 2 large terminals , for 30 seconds or so, before you start it in the am to see it if that helps.
