FMX - Neutral Safety

It appears my truck has an FMX transmission; the engine and transmission came out of a 1973 Mercury Cougar (351c 2 barrel). From what I am finding, the neutral safety switch is part of the transmission on C4 and C6 tranny's but is always part of the shifter housing on vehicles equipped with an FMX.

I have an aftermarket floor shifter with no provision for a neutral safety switch, does anyone have a suggestion?

I am not positive but you may not need it. I do not use one with my converted C6 from 3spd. The only difference is my truck will crank regardless of the selector position. I know it and it is not an issue.

I am not advocating that it is the way to go, only that it can be operated without one.

Right, my truck will crank in any position. That doesn't bother me, but I would like the reverse lights to work, and I believe I will need them to work to pass the safety inspection. I might just wire them up to a dashboard mounted switch, but Murphy's Law says if I do that I'll wind up forgetting one day and driving 40 miles with the backup lights on, lol.

OK, scratching head, what does the N Saftey, have to do with backup lites?

You can ask if backup lites are required to pass before getting inspection. You can mount a switch with a light on it so you will know when it's being used.

On most transmissions the neutral safety switch includes 4 wires, 2 that are connected when the transmission is in P or N (wire that to the switch going to the starter) and 2 that are connected when the transmission is in R (wire that to the backup lights). So it's all one switch.
