hey guys ive got a 1978 f100 lariat 302. lately ive been having trouble dying and stalling and its not my carb or overheating. ive been told its more then likely my ignition module. i was wondering if anybody knew a place to get a pretty reliable one because ive heard these aftermarket ones arent very good at all. also if they just go out like people say they do is there a way to bypass the module? to be honest i dont know much about the functions of it or if there is an alternative to having one besides having efi or anything like that.

 

Do yourself a favor and buy a genuine Motorcraft module, it will cost more up front but will pay for itself overtime when compared to the cheap overseas modules, if you do buy an off brand module buy two and keep one under the seat they tend to fail at the most inopportune time.

I agree. I've also had good luck with NAPA's premium line.

Also, check the wires inside the distributor where they connect to the pickup coil. Mine had deteriorated from engine heat and broke off, making intermittent contact causing similar symptoms of a bad module.

 

I don't know, but mine is the original module.

 

If that's not a testament i don't know what is lol.

 

I've been lucky I guess, thought about getting a cheap one and putting it inside behind the seat, just in case.

Replacement off-brand modules are reverse-engineered from the original, and can fail quickly. It's not uncommon for the original module to last 25 years. I too have had good luck with Napa modules.

 

one more question, the one on there right now is some off brand made in china module and i cant tell what kind or a seriel number. on summit they have like 8 motorcraft modules and on the motorcraft website they have two is the dy983 the one i need for a 78?

 

My search shows it as a DY-893.
