Get a block of wood and put it on the 3rd member. AND then get a BIG F#CK!NG hammer and hit it. The sealant has it stuck on

It's been a LONG time since I had a 9" apart so bear with me. I don't remember if it has bolts going into the rear axle or if it mounts on studs protruding from the axle housing. In either case, you want to leave a few bolts/nuts installed, but loose, when you are prying or beating on the "chunk" to get it loose. It's fairly heavy and you really don't want to try to catch it with one hand...

Okay well i managed to get the member off today. Nothing a good ol hammer and screwdriver cant do!

Now my question is what can i use to clean out the gears and such of the 3rd member? To make sure theres no dirt or chunks of old gasket and such.

Also once i get this member put into my trucks axle and bolted in how do i fill the axle and how much oil am i going to need? Was told i should use 75w-90?

Thanks.

An btw sport45, good call man, i had no idea that freaking thing was going to be that heavy hahaha.

Brake cleaner works good to remove dirt and the old gear oil. A parts cleaning brush helps to break things loose.

All 9 inch rears had a fill hole on either the back of the housing or on the third member itself. Either way fill until the fluid just seeps out the fill hole. If you are changing third
members I hope you checked to see which of the housing or the gear set member had
the fill hole. If it is the housing you are good to go with any third member, if it is on the
third member you have to get one also has a fill hole.

What is the little round **** thing on the bottom of my axle housing?

I got my 3rd member finished, cleaned, washed, and painted.

After i got it cleaned i noticed on the right side is has a square plug, is this a draining plug??

Now i went to the auto store to pick up some rear end oil but, i then asked a fella their how many quarts it need and he said 2.5 so we looked it up on the computer just to make sure and it said 5.5? So how many quarts does a 9'' rear end need to be completely filled? Also he mentioned about a special additive for it since it has the limited slip diff?

Thanks for your help fellas.

Some years are 6.5 pints and some are 5.5. It doesn't really matter. If you found the fill hole, which should be about half-way to 3/4 of the way up the side of the axle, you start filling the axle with oil till it runs out the hole. The bottom of the fill hole is the proper oil level for the rearend. This is also the method for manual transmissions.

You can add the special lube for the limited slip, but I never saw any difference with not using it. Most older limited slip rearend clutches are worn out and don't half work anyway.

Well, you see im a bit confused, because i have this plug on the side of the 3rd member, but too me it seems to be more of a drainage plug than to fill it up. Its a odd fitting, you have to have a square bit that goes into it to take it out?

Any idea if this is actually the filling area?

I've done some reading and i have heard that people have actually drilled and tapped in their own plugs to easy fill and drain their 9'' rears?

That should be it, use a 3/8 or 1/2 in extension on a ratchet. Fill it up to the bottom of that
hole.

Good call Ctu, thanks.

Okay, so i went over and checked out the axle underneath the truck right now and im wondering what this doo-dad is? It has 3 lines connected to the brakes for it but it seems like its connected to the axle housing also??

It's the axle vent, it releases pressure in hi-heat situations. THIS THING IS NECESSARY to
keep from pushing gear oil out the end axle seals and into your brakes, make sure it's free of
obstructions.
