Performance upgrades to a 2010 F250 Diesel

My buddy recently purchased a 2010 F250 fully loaded 4 door diesel. He is wanting to do some kind of performance upgrade but this is his first deisel. Neither one of us know much about diesels. He is wanting to get the most performance he can while still improving his gas mileage. I think he is getting about 15 or maybe 16 on the highway right now as it sits.

I know there are tons of stuff for these diesels, bully dog and banks i guess may be the best known. Anyways what are your opinons on what he should do to the truck? He is interested in doing anything to chips, programmers, exhaust or whatever.

Thank for you input!

I have the banks 6-gun. it is a clean tune, makes a little power but I run it close to stock. I use it mostly to refine the stock program and the ability to monitor the motor.

I would never recommend bully dog for this motor. I would also say that your friend needs to work his truck a bit before he does anything to it.

What is the intended purpose of the truck, how does he use it?

I would put at least 30k miles on it before i modded the motor, thats just me personlly, so will say less, but diesels dont totally break-in till around 25-30k. also if you do a DPF delete, say bye bye to your warranty

Like said earlier, modding that truck will just void the warranty. I'm sure his truck already has more than enough power. If it's worth it there are plenty of good resources out there though.

power upgrade

Yes I have good power as is but have been told by someone i trust that they boosted their fuel economy from 8 mpg to 12mpg when towing by installing the SVT. I haven't gotten back up with the guy but i can find nothing about the "SVT"

Powerstroke72,

I am confused. Did I do something wrong here? I am just trying to get advice on improving my performance to tow a fifth wheel. Everyone has opinions. I was hoping here I would find professional experience and advice.

Did I dinged for something I said?

16mpg on the highway isn't terrible. Theres room for gains but thats decent. My 2010 will go down the highway @ 72 mph and give me about 18.5 mpg. If I set cruise and hang around 68 mph, I can get around 19.25 mpg. Thats with anywhere from 1-3 people in truck with the AC on. I'm happy with that but still hate the dpf with a passion!

if you dont know what a "DPF" is...you really need to do your homework on the diesel before you decide to do any modifying. WATCH, LISTEN, AND SAVE THIS VIDEO FOR FUTURE USE. superduty

REMEMBER....this motors are expensive.....not only to maintain but to repair and REPLACE. And everybody will tell you that FORD is really watching the warranty items.

Homework

Well thanks Superduty_08,

By consulting this forum I AM DOING MY HOMEWORK. I'm not looking for a Holier Than Thou lecture. I asked a simple question.
I see DPF mentioned in all of the literature I have read about performance upgrades but have not seen it defined. Therefore, I seek answers here.

But thanks for the slam.

Best to start in the tech folder for this forum. If you read the bible that helps alot, along with some of the pictures so that you can reference different areas on the motor and DPF.

then if you go thru some of the other stuff in the tech folder you will see some of the issues that have been encoutered with this motor and the emissions stuff.

Finally the diesel supplement is worthy reading. Take some time to understand the differences between normal driving conditions and severe.

Follow the severe maint. schedule.

You can also register at the ford owners website with your vin. There you can track your maintance and see all the manuals in PDF format.
