Well, the ol girl has learned a new truck. she'll start great cold, even better than some PSD's, but drive a good 30 miles and grab a bite to eat and its a good solid 30 seconds (not continuous) of cranking to refire.
What the hell is this?

i wouldnt jump to that right now honestly.
When i was tinkering on the tuning of the IP, my truck had fits in the same fashion, right away it would start immediately, but if i let it sit for a 30-45 minute shopping trip it would give me a 10-15 second crank. If i let it sit for a wifes length shopping trip(lol) it will fire just right, 120+ minutes hehe. When i turned it back advanced from being a little retarded, which was one line width, it hasnt done it since. Just a thought.

Actually the lady may be onto something here - we just recently had a member on OBN complain from the same issue, hard start when hot, but if he jumped the glowplugs relay and thus manually powered them bypassing the controller the truck would fire right up! Why that is I dunno, but for some reason this guy's truck needs the plugs every time he starts it. This issue proclaimed itself when his controller all of sudden started to not glow the plugs at all when the engine is warmed up (when before it used to do it for eat least several seconds), but when cold the plugs work like they should. The Collective came up with the scenario that maybe one or more of his harness connectors are semi-loose on the glowplugs and when the engine is hot they expand just enough to create a poor connection and thus increase the circuit's resistance greatly to the point where the controller won't trigger the relay, kinda how it does when several plugs are burned out - it was suggested that he feels the harness connectors to see if they fit snug on the plug when the engine is hot, so maybe that's something Dean88 should try too?

same here.when i know the engines warm,i dont wait for the light.instant start.
need to keep in mind, the ip and injectors are medium ware items, and Mel suggests changing/rebuilding them every 100k miles anyway in his ip tech article due to having such close tolerance specs.
ip timing is very important too.
if you dont keep a diesel tuned up,your just going to pay more in the long run in fuel anyway.it sucks cus our tune ups are so much higher than gas rig tune ups.but we've saved it in fuel over running the 460 for 100k miles and then some.

My truck is the same way, I actually tied the glowplugs controller into the cold-advance circuit so when the coolant is warm enough to not engage the fast idle and the cold advance the plugs don't glow either - in really cold weather that setup comes back to haunt me sometimes after sitting for a few hours, but then I'd just hit the override switch for 5 seconds and she fires right up again. This guy's truck tho, I dunno why it needs the plugs to fire when hot, and since he's in Panama it makes it all that more weird cause of al the how weather they get down there, but it is a fact that he needs the plugs if only for a few seconds...
