OPERATION BETTER MPG!!

All my friends have newer trucks and give me a hard time for driving this old girl. She runs good and is paid for but gets awful gas mileage. My friends have newer gm trucks that get 14-16 in town. Im gonna try my best to get her there.

fueleconomy.gov

says the rating on my truck is
city-12
highway-17
combined-14

newer chevy 4.8/5.3
city-14/15
highway-19/20
combined-16/17

newer ford 4.6/5.4
city-14/13
highway-19/17
combined-16/14

newer dodge 4.7/5.9
city-13/13
highway-18/19
combined-15/15

Ok boys I got a 1995 F150 5.0L auto 2wd extended cab,3.31 gears,225/75r15 tires and is bone stock! The truck has 217k on it and the motor was rebuild 75k ago. So Im gonna do a few things in hopes to bring it up. My daily driving is 16 miles round trip. Its a mix of light traffic, lights and straight aways. I dont lead foot the truck but I dont putt either.

Stock: avg 10.7mpg {3 tanks of gas}
Removed stock muffler: avg 12.1mpg {3 tanks of gas}
*still have both cats. My exhaust currently ends at the back of the cab. Yes Im gonna change it.

Future plans:

tune up
gut the cats with a turbo muffler
delete egr
remove all the smog

Im open to suggestions!

Saturday morning I replaced the radiator because mine had a leak. I have a buddy that works for jaguar that hooked me up with a electric fan setup from a car they warranted the radiator assembly. Its a trick setup. I was reading on the f150 forum some guy did it to his 5.4L triton and went from 11-12mpg up to 13-14mpg. We will see. I know people say its like 15-20hp. Truthfully I didnt notice anything as far as power difference. I will keep you updated.

Is some pics of the fan setup. Sorry about the wiring I have not cleaned it up yet. It was a pain in the *** let me tell ya. I bought a fan control setup that was for 2 fans with ac. Had a 45 amp relay and 20 amp fuse. I wired everything up and it worked great for about 20 minutes. One fan was on with the ac and the other was coming on at 160 degrees. I took the truck to get food and noticed the sc was not blowing cold. I popped the hood and the 20 fuse was melted. I thought for 2 fans a 20 amp and single relay was not enough but it thats what it showed to be setup for. I added a extra relay and ran the wire from th controller to the 12v turn key side of the 2nd relay. Added a 30amp fuse for both relays. Well the relay that ran the motor fan {thermo controlled but temp was fine} but the ac fan kept blowing fuses. So I cut the wire from the controller for the ac. I hooked it up straight from the ac. No change it kept popping fuses. So I cut that wire and just hooked it up to the turn key 12v power source. Problem solved!! One fan comes on when the key is on while the other comes on a 160 degrees. Here are the pictures of the setup. I will clean up the wiring I just ran out of time.

cell phone pics! sorry

I will update this post with the new mpg good or bad

some mpg threads

All good except the EGR.. that actually helps fuel milage so you're better to leave it alone. You can however delete the thermactor(air injection) system, that's all the plumbing and valves connected between the air pump and the back of the motor, and the tube that runs down to the cat is also part of it. To prevent codes simply leave the TAB and TAD solenoids beside the coil electrically connected but remove or cap the vacuum lines.

Further mods that will help engine power and milage are shorty headers, 1.7 rockers, and advancing the timing, stock it's set at 10deg and some motors will tolerate 2-4deg more.

Thats a ford vs chevy deal right there. Researching online it seems to be a hit and miss. Some say it helps some say it will improve. Some say it wont change anything

Random Q, but how much HP does the power steering consume on the highway? I figured that these trucks do about 100,000 BTU of work in an hour going 60 mph. The alternator draws ~ 1 hp, which goes to 2500 btu/hour. So total alternator delete should give 2.5% fuel mileage increase (probably not worth it)

Say the P/S is a 3 HP, if that could be cut down to half on the highway, gains might be 1/2 a mpg.

Also, removing the 3" body lift from my truck seems to have earned me an extra mpg.

Paul, if I removed the thermactor, could I put an old style alternator bracket (where you move the alternator, instead of a spring tensioner) on the truck?

Dont remove the PS, you will find the truck much harder to steer.
