Transfercase

Tell me about this T-case i have.

It's out of an 89 Bronco w/ a 302 motor, It's a manual shift, 31 input spline, and Was behind a Mazda 5spd trans.

Is it specific to the Mazda 5spd trans or will this T-case work on AOD and E4OD auto trannies?

Also can someone tell me what it is? I believe from some research that it's a BW 1356 but not sure.

Thanks

If its a 1356 it will fit most any thing. It has the same bolt pattern as the old NP205's so I'm talking even the old 4 speeds. It should say on it 1356 somewhere.

it is either a borg-warner 13-45 or 13-56. Both are part time chain driven transfer cases. the 1345 is the precursor to the 1356. Bother were put in trucks and broncos in late 80's early 90's. I did alot of looking and wasnt ever able to find a specific date when they switched. I'v seen 88 trucks with the 1356, and 93 trucks with the 1345 and vise verse.

The 1345 is a tad weaker and has a 2.7 to 1 low range. It also has a fixed output yoke that is part of the aluminum case. I dont know of any issues other then it being a little weaker then the 1356.

The 1356 has a 2.69-1 low range. Its considered stronger. And the output yoke and the "cone" (case around it) will have bolts holding on to the main rear case half of the unit. These came in both slip yoke and fixed yoke configurations. The 1356 has one issue with the oil pump. It tends to wear down the grove that keeps it from spinning place. When that happens the oil stops flowing to the upper part of the case and it will kill it. But its nothing a rebuild wont fix, and they are easy to rebuild.

Easiest way to tell which is which is to look under the truck and see if the output "cone" where the drive shaft bolts up, is bolted on to the rest of the case or if it is simply cast into the rear half of the case itself.

I hope answered some of your questions.

You're the man. Thanks

Went out and looked at it, it has the "Cone" on the output and it's held on with some big Torx heads....

Then i looked closer and right to the left of it, it says "13-56", lol i'm a jackass.

Thanks! Does it being manual shift make it special?

Not really, there are lots of them, the manual shift is more desirable for serious 4x4'ers. It much better to pull the lever and feel it go into gear over pushing a button and hoping it worked. And of course you dont know it didnt work until your stuck.
