I completly forgot you were looking into getting a ZX3 or Focus in general.

You can run anything you want as long it's not tippy like the Suzuki Side-Flips

Lots of people run stock cars.

My direct competetion is a 98 Escourt ZX2. He has a cat-back exhaust and is automatic. Before this event he put aftermarket suspension on it.
There was a guy who ran a Scion xB when it still had temp plates on it.
I'v seen a late 70's early 80's VW vanagon run once (with a more lenient groupe). And then there is a late 80's S10 blazer dropped and v8 swap.

The local track here, Thunder Road, does or used to do that. I guess there was a guy that would run his bread truck.

I know a little about Thunder Raod. It becomes a contact sport on "Run what you brung" nights.

Auto-Cross is basicly a time tryal. One car at a time. Do a Google search for SCCA Solo II event if your board.

The next event is Aug 28 and 29. Aug 28 is a school but unfortunatly it's an advanced school. But you can come and help out and hang out. You can run on sunday but it's $50 to run. If you want to get serous about either watching or running you have my number.

My ZX3 gets from 28-32 because of my modifications and the right foot. The wagon gets about 32-33.

the wife will like the low 30mpg, save some $$ on fill ups compared to the diesel excursion. What mods to the zx3?

Low 30's should be easy as long as you keep the foot out of it.

Mine is a 5speed manual.
Cat back exhaust.
Larger plug wires
synthetic oil
I put the SVT suspension under it (dropped it about 1/2 inch). Still verry streetable.
polly bushings front to back.
front strut bar (I have a used blue one if you get a 00-04 and want it)
front and rear 25mm sway bars
dedicated summer tires
65mm throttle body. touchy gas pedal and speculated 1-2mpg better but could go the other way real quick.
B&M shor throw shifter.

I think thats about it. Mostly suspension stuff and very little motor stuff.
