How to clean the Turbo

I am replacing an egr cooler for the second time. First time dealer did it under warrenty. This time i am replacing with a upgraded erg cooler and also replacing the oiler cooler which was not done by the dealer the first time. My question is i have the truck torn down. The turbo spins fine and shows no rust. But i do have a oil residue. Any suggestion on the proper way to clean the turbo, should i live it alone? is this residue normal. Intercooler pipes have same oil residue. Any help appreciated.

Here's a thread that has a link to the instructions on how to clean your turbo:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...urbo-abcs.html

It came from the 6.0 Tech Folder: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/3...ch-folder.html

The oil is from your crank case vent. Cleaning the oil film or small puddles in the intercooler pipes is a waste of time. Unless you want to vent the crank case to the atmosphere, the oil film will return as soon as you drive around. Completely normal for these trucks.

Dumb question, why are you replacing your oil cooler? Is it leaking? Why not just rebuild it?

I am rebuilding it. I bought an upgraded egr cooler and oil cooler kit from B-P- Diesel.

Thank you for your response.

Why don't you call Ken Neal at Bullet Proof for his opinion?
(Tell him A-DOG said to call)

You've got it off, I think I would clean it. Not because of the oil residue, but because you have been blowing coolant through it. That's assuming your EGR cooler was leaking, which you did not say.

yes i have a bad egr cooler. the truck was blowing out white fog like when the first one failed. just got the egr cooler off less than a second ago and it does not look bad on the inside, did find a tear in the oil cooler filter. so i am going to take my time and rebuild the oil cooler, install bullet proofs egr cooler and try and clean the turbo. now that i have oil everywhere i got my cleaning to do before the putting everything back together. did not expect the oil cooler sump to be that full after draining the oil already. keep the advise coming i really appreciate it.

I think this is your answer re the turbo cleaning. If you've ever had concentrated coolant on your hands you know how sticky it is and cannot be good for the turbo. Plus, it steam cleans the intake, carrying a log of gunk with it.

Like most things on FTE, you usually find bits of info in a number of places, and it is up to you to make sense of it all.

However, the first two posts in the thread that SteveBricks gave you above are very good. Review all the links in those two posts.
