Hey all, my Dad is looking at buying a '94 F250 with a camper... How many miles will a 460 take before it is shot? I think of the old big blocks and 100,000 seemed like there on the edge of death. I could be wrong though. Here is a link to the add so you know as much about it as I do.

He is really interested in the camper, but the truck is only 2.5K. Would he be better off with a newer truck and the V10? I just don't want my Dad to end up needing an engine in the near future. Thanks in advance.

 

There is no inherent design problems in the 7.5L engine. If the previous owners kept up on maintenance there is no reason a modern engine would not go 200K+ miles before needing major service.

 

im almost at 200k its my work truck im planning on replacing it after i put another 100k through it. Really with regular maintenance nothing really goes wrong with em

 

I have a 95 with 160,000 on it and other than a trans (all my fault) I havent had any major problems.

I know of a guy at work with a 390,000 mile 460 in his 91 F-250, never been opened up, uses 1/2 qt of oil in 3,000 miles.

 

it really depends on what RPM range the engine was in majority of its life... low and babied the frame might rust out before it goes.... High strung motors tend not to last as long as low strung motors. off topic - I personally think this is why diesels last so damn long but that may be just me.

 

My carbureted '87 made it to almost 315k before it finally spun a bearing on cold startup.
It was losing about a quart in 3000 miles at that point.
The engine itself is very sturdy, which made it a favorite among fleet departments and bus companies.

 

I agree with the other guys, it should run for a long time yet. Dad has around 170,000 on his 89 250 4wd with 460 and 5 speed and uses a quart or two between 3000 mile oil changes, depends if its pulling trailers or just getting through the snow. His 92, and 94 F150's with the 302 each have around 170,000 and seem to run well and use little oil also.

Looks like a nice truck, probably worth the money.

 

100k isn't much for any of the engines ford put in the trucks. Even with not-so-great treatment, 150k is easy. With good maintenance, 200k and beyond isn't unheard of. I'd say go for it if the price is within your budget.

 

My truck had 400,000 km on the clock before I ripped out the 460 and installed a 351w. Sold it to a guy for a drag car project, lasted 4 months before bearings went but had the bottom end rebuilt. They are very durable motors if you take good care of them.

I run my 1994 460 at a very high RPM on any hill at 35 MPH with a 5.13 rear end and it has 57,000 miles on the clock but I was told the PO had already changed the engine because of an oil leak and it now has 10,000 miles on the engine. It also runs very hot at the high RPM with the electric fan and stock fans both running.
I have not come up with a way to change the engine yet, they tell me it has to come out the bottom. So I am think about building a pit to take it out when it comes time.

To the OP that looks like a good deal, if I did not already have two RV's (class A and a class B) and a van made for camping I would go for it and put out with my other eleven Fords. Ford makes good engines and the 460 is one of the best. But if he buys it and is going to pull something have him install a track bar on the rear end to keep it from tail waging.

 

The 460 is excellent for durability an longevity. Can you really ever wear them out? I have 1 460 that is over 21 years old used an indusriall application thats got over 15,000 hrs on the clock and is running as good as it did when it was new. Thats a lot off miles. I have always said the two best motor Ford ever put in to a pickup were the 460 an 390. I know a neighbor off mine has a 390 in an old 72 that refuses to die. He bought the truck new an it is running great yet. But its a Ford and you expect that. If you look at the truck pulling circuit. Those motors are popular because they can take all the abuse they dish out.

 

Why would it have to come out the bottom ? That makes no sense in these trucks. That's a FWD phenomenon.

Because I can not take it out the front or top.
This is on the F53 in my signature.
I thought about pulling it up through the top and then taking it out through the side window but I do not know if it will fit through the side window or through the top hole. I would have to put down 3/4 plywood for the engine hoist to move around on while it is inside. I would not want to take it out through the windshield because there is a center divider in the windshield.
