94 Aero 3L 2WD 142,000 miles Clockspring problems and repairs

I noticed that the horn and cruise control suddenly quit working along with an airbag code of 3-2. I checked this forum and found that the most likely culprit would be the clockspring buried inside the steering wheel innards. I also had a manual that was 1994 specific as far as all the electrical info, and that confirmed that a common ground was lost in the clockspring.

NOTE: I disconnected the battery ground wire and let sit overnight before starting this project!!

Since Clocksprings cost in the area of $130.00 I decided to try a repair instead. I found that someone on this forum used ribbon cable, and that is what I used, 6 ½ feet was about the right length to not bind up along with plenty of silicon lubricant. I used 10 wires and parallel connected every two conductors for a total of 5 finished conductors. I did install a couple of mini connectors on existing wires so that I didn’t have to take much apart other that removing the steering wheel. This project did take a bit of careful soldering and may not be everyone’s idea of a home based repair job. In hindsight, I think that I could have repaired the original clockspring with some careful Dremel tool cutting and fancy soldering, but it’s too late for that now

The horn and cruise are back, and now the airbag flashes 5-1 instead of the 3-2. I don’t doubt that the airbag is defective, but so far have “fixed” it with black tape over the light. I am reluctant to go to the JY to get another bag, and don’t feel like spending hundreds for a new one. If anyone knows exactly what the 5-1 code means, please let me know. The airbag has a round cover over the innards, and there is NOT a rectangular removable cover with a thermal fuse inside as some other Aero bags have.
