Same type of phosegene gas that the old R-12 refridgerant gives off when going through an old propane type ac freon leak detector. Glad that I don't have to fool with that stuff anymore. The flame would turn green when you passed a leak, heads up.

So from what i am reading in this article, the non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner is a safer formula correct? From what i just read phosgene gas is created when the chemicals are exposed to excessive heat and that would include open flames. I have used brake cleaner to get fires going before, though i usually use kerosene, diesel, wd-40, carb cleaner or something like that. Im glad i have never been extremely close to the fire. Wow, thats not good at all. Phosegene gas is not some friendly stuff. Thanks for this post, i will stay away from non-chlorinated brake fluid and using it near an open flame.

I returned to this thread to see what's up lately and I'm AMAZED at the number of folks welding for (I suspect) companies that are not familiar with these perils. Do companies no longer emphasize a Workplace Hazardous Materials Management Information System (WHMMIS)? Correct me if I'm wrong but it's LAW!
Phosgene gas is only one of many hazards. My goodness, this is scary.

Two thumbs up on this thread!!! I was hacking badly the other night from cleaning a carb with carb cleaner. Looks like certain types of carb cleaner are really poisonous as well.. Ouch

I work with HD mechanics, addicted to brake kleen and welders that follow mechanic's work. About 6 of each X 4 shifts. Probably use 24 cans of brake kleen per 24 hours! I plan to bring this article forward at our next pre-job meeting! I have also forwarded this link to anyone that might own a can of brake kleen in my contacts list. Thanks for posting it!
