I have a new to me 09 exp'y xlt and I have noticed that I occasionally have a small water leak from the top of the rear glass. I am only seeing a drop or two, but I don't think something is right. Is this a common problem? Searched the forum and saw a post from an older model exp'y, I'm not sure if the design has changed at all since then or not. should I take it too the dealer? Any suggestions with out taking it to the dealer?

Leaking in the glass seal? Or the door?

 

My 07 did this. the seal from the hatch glass door to the weatherstripping is not great. This needs to be adjusted. The dealer can do this.

 

not a normal issue. I'll bet your weatherseal is pinched or needs to be "fluffed" a bit as berry mentioned.


Let the Dealership fix it up. Shouldn't take them more than 5-10 minutes

 

The rear weather strip is made of a harder material than the other pieces on the car. It's not a good quality to seal out water IMO.

 

My '09 leaked at the top of the rear glass also. The dealer replaced the rear seal but it did not help. How do you adjust the seal to maintain better contact with the glass?

 

I have had this "fixed" twice by 2 dealers and it still leaks...not very often but it still happens. I gave up and make sure I coat the seal with 303 every other wash.

 

Yep it's a very common problem. I had two separate dealerships tell me it was third brake light, but the water is clearly penetrating around other parts of the seal. One dealership actually replaced the the third light assembly. Guess what? It still leaks all around the top of the glass/seal.

I read somewhere the fix is an oversized weatherstrip seal Ford has developed, but neither of the dealerships would listen to me.

 

This is a good idea. I wipe the strip clean with warm wet rag then treat it with some good rubber protectant.

The problem is no doubt the material/size of the strip. Maybe the 2010's have a better one.

 

Must be a Ford thing. My Mustang passenger side window leaks a little bit when I wash it too. Not a lot, but, enough to annoy me.

 

I had the same problem. It was leaking at the top of the liftgate. The first time they replaced the weatherstrip, still leaked. The second time they made some "adjustments" and leaked even more. The third time I think they finally got it right. They replaced the Liftgate's hinges. They said the hinges weren't closing all the way and the seal between the glass and the weatherstrip was bad. It has only been a week, but so far so good, It poured today and no water!!!

 

Yes my 07 did this too... My dealer worked and worked and finally replaced the weather strip with a bigger (fatter) one. This has really helped, but my Wife says it is still not perfect either, but livable only a few drops every now and then....

 

I had the same problem on my '08 Expedition. I had intermittent, slow water leak from between the top of the hatch glass and the weatherstrip. I have been to the dealer a total of 15 times, and it still leaks. So far they have tried:

1) Change weatherstrip (at least three times)
2) Make "adjustments" (numerous times)
3) Change out the glass window.
4) Change out the entire hatch assembly.
5) Bend out the flange on the hatch.

Guess what... still leaks. They told me that they never heard of such a problem before.

I have considered just caulking the hatch window shut and disengaging the latch, so it will never open - but I am concerned about dirt/leaves/debris building up in the dead space, which can lead to rust and corrosion - if I seal the window shut.

 

Tell them you want to have a ford engineer look at it and find out whats wrong. They will setup a date for when he is at the dealership for you to bring it in.

 

Mine we leaking pretty much this winter, but since it has gotten hot arround here, I have not noticed it leaking at all. So I will probably just wait until the winter to finally bring it to the dealer. Unless I bring it in for something else.
