ive been toying with the idea of building a new truck and my brother and a couple mates have 7.3 power stroke trucks but the later intercooled ones but i only want a mid 90s truck and wondering what can be done to up the power of these? can these match the99-03 psd? thanks

 

Depends on how much power you want. You can do about anything to these motors. These trucks (94.5-97) have a stronger connecting rod so you're able to put more power to these than a SD. They changed to a powder forged rod in 2000???? Not sure on the year, someone had a list where they changed.

Injectors, chip, what do you want?? These trucks are capable of double the power they came with if not more without touching the bottom end. According to others who have dynoed with similar mods as mine I should have 340-350 hp at the rear wheels and pushing 750+ torque. These are smaller mods compared to some.

here are some easy things you can do that will make an earlier PSD smoke your brother's superchip powered truck...

4" exhaust or bigger, guages(EGT, boost, and if you have auto trans a trans temp guage), if you have an auto trans start off w/ installing a larger transmission cooler, and a better valvebody like from BTS, John Wood automotive, or racer-x.. If you have a manual trans then go ahead and get an aftermarket clutch from Valair inc.. once you've done that stuff you will have a pretty solid truck under you, but it won't have tons of power yet. you can get a little larger injectors like stage 1's from Jim Rosewood @ diy-injectors.com and custom tuning and you will fly past your brothers SD with no problem. if you want to smoke him even worse then step up to stage 2 injectors.. no bigger than stage 2's with your stock turbo though. Oh yeah and add on an IC(intercooler) from an SD as well and build yourself an electric fuel system or buy a complete one from dieselsite.

Banks and superchips are pretty generic, here's some better ideas if they work out for you.

You can check with Jim at rosewood diesel, see if he ships to australia. He sells PHP chips and does injector work, and also sells injectors and DIY injector upgrade kits. Send him an email, see what he says.

Other good tuners are DP tuner and TW. I don't know TW site, here's DP's and Jim's site if they work for me.

go to total diesel performance. a tony wildman is a good custum tuning chip for the obs. adds more power easy. you put in all your current modes and its like $50 to send it in to be reprogramed if modify any thing else. real easy to install. only cost me $488.88. i got 6 points on it change on the fly. real cool

 

I use DP tuner they too do awesome for power upgrades, and I also know Bill and Corey from PHP, and they are also some of the best in the business. The only real difference is DP tuner uses a digital controller with up to 16 programs on the chip.

 

nothing from Banks, Edge, Superchips, Bully Dog, etc is needed on these trucks. those are all big names with generic parts that don't do much good for our trucks. Our trucks really benifit more from custom tuning than the generic stuff. custom would be filling out a form of whats done to your truck and then the tuner burns the chip accordingly for what you have done.

Go to www.totaldieselperformance.com and check out their custom chips and you will see the form at the bottom there. just remember though. Supporting mods are needed before power mods so that you can actually use the potential of your power mods. Exhaust, intake, guages, HPOP, fuel system, etc all fit into the supporting mod field. each level of power has different required supporting mods. like if you want to keep stock injectors you would just need exhaust, intake, and guages really as supporting mods. for stage 1 injectors i'd say add in an HPOP, HPX line, IC, and electric fuel system as supporting mods. same supporting mods for stage 2's with the addition of a turbo eventually when the stocker eats itself.

 

I have a question Travis why do you think it is necessary to have electric fuel over the stock pump? Just curious

Ya, I just made a 280 mile round trip with queen mattress and boxspring sticking above the cab one way moving my kid, made 17mpg doing 76 mph. 3.55 gears.

 

THe stock mechanical pump can handle up to 500hp, although the electric fuel is more reliable and will handle more power if needed.

Putting a electric pump in addition to the stock pump wouldn't help anything.

i dont have the big hp/trq of the built PSD but so far what i like about the old school is a set of 8 brand new injectors is around $200.
ahh,i drive like granma anyway lol.i enjoy reading about my next truck though.
