What do you mean by seized? What kind of brakes, air or hydraulic? You should be able to back the brakes off. If the axle shaft has cones around the studs you can smack it in the center of the flange and the cones will work their way out with the shaft. Should be a Meritor axle so probably has the cones.

By seized i mean on the right side read the wheel won't spin it's locked . I didn't try backing the brakes off yet. Do i use a regular screwdriver type spanner to back off the brake adjusters??? I'm going to be down for a while got a bad sunburn on my back as well as asphalt and gravel embedded in my back
There are these lock washer looking things around the studs are those the cones? they won't budge. So you are saying i should bang the center of the axle flange with a hammer????? it' s hydraulic.
I'm working on an Isuzu medium duty but they japanese has sense to use bolts instead of studs. axles came right out.

They are hydraulic brakes? If so they are lucas girling and they take a special tool to adjust the brakes. OTC 5072 Lucas Rear Brake Adjusting Tool
Are you sure it's the brakes and not the wheel bearings seized? If it is the brakes and this truck has been sitting up the shoes may be stuck to the drum. If you can't back the shoes off you may have to whack the drum to see if you can get them free'd up.
FYI, if they are hydraulic these brakes are quite expensive to repair.

what a nightmare. banged the **** out of it and didn't seem to work then i saw grease trickling out. after w while the grease loosedned up the cones. i got them off with a vice grip. yes this truck was sitting up for a long time. i don't know what it is but if i pull the axles and take out the wheel bearing nut should i be able to slide the whole drum and all off???
Yes it is hydraulic with the boose cansisters. the cage bolt is backed all the way out. I know the parts are expensive but seems like there were 2 brand new wheel cylinders in the cab.
i hope i can order new cones and a gasket because they are mangled.
Anway there is a lock washern with tangs with spring tension from the tangs on the wheel bearing nut? do i pry them up or what?? what size is that nut??
thanks

i have heard lol. i heard i can get them complete backing plates and all for $1500 a set. i hope it's a set. It's a rollback. i got it in pieces don't know why but driveshaft was out, wter pump. right frontg caliper is missing. maater cylinder and all that stuff up front was in thr cab. i didn't even know if it ran but got it running and it runs darn good. 5.9b series. i put driveshaft in and drove it across my property. guewss wheel bearing is still good. Even if i have to go for the whole thing it will be worth it i can make some cash and not worry about the brakes for a while.

mrblonde108,
Yes you can buy the studs and gaskets. The lock tabs are cold rolled steel. Use a small punch or chisel to flatten them to unlock the nuts. Try measuring across the flats to get a size on the axle nuts. I'm thinking 3 and 1/2" but I'm not certain. The backing plate uses bolts with nuts so unbolting it with the drum on isn't an option. It's been awhile since I've worked on one of these but it should have slide off drums. Can you post a pic?

hi. the lock tabs popped open when i gave them a little yank with a screw driver. and the axle nuts unscewed by hand. maybe all that banging. funny the isuzu is a smaller truck and the nuts is 3 1/2 the f800 nut is smaller. i have to get the otc tool to let off on the adjusters. with any luck the drum should come off on the side that still spins barely. the other side won't turn unless i'm using engine power. Now i have to hunt that tool down. I will report back when i try to loosen the adjusters.
thanks everyone

hey pisanos
Well i got the side that the wheels still spun off. I ordered the tool. the one wheel cylinder has 2 adjuster wheels on it. One side was seized the other i could back off. I got the drum off on that side luckily.
I was hoping for the same luck on the other side but i'm screwed. i can't budge the adjusters. Any ideas? Would oxy acetylene torch work??
