After stopping to fuel up, I started up the road and my truck sputtered a bit and died. I was running on the front tank when this happened. I tried to restart the truck, but it would not. I flipped the switch to the back tank and it start up. It runs just fine on the back tank, but will not run on the front tank at all. Never had any problem like this before. Just a wild a$$ guess, but I'm thinking the fuel pump died. Or, could it be someting else?
What say you?

Sounds like it. It happens that way a lot of times. I was on my way to the airport one day, stopped in at my office for something for like 5 min, got beck in my car and that was that... just cranked and cranked. Pump died.

Do you hear the pump run when switched to the front tank and first turn the key on?

 

mine does the same thing but only when its hot outside

 

Yes it would be the pump in the tank or the selector switch on the dash that is bad on your 1996 F250.

 

Thanks for the replys!! The truck is a 1997. I haven't time to work on it much. The pump didn't whine. However, today I got a chance to drive the truck and I flipped the switch to the forward tank and guess what, it works. Hmm, what the heck is going on?

 

sounds like a bad selector switch

 

change you selector switch, run some heat and fuel injector cleaner through it to make sure you don't have condensation in the tank... enough moisture could cause the engine to die. the heat will clean that out and the injector cleaner will clean the ports on your injectors... just to make sure you are all good that way...

 

I wouldnt rule out the fuel pump just yet. It could be on its way and driving around could have just knocked it enough to get it going a few times. I work road service for AAA and often can get a fuel pump running again by tapping on the tank, works the same way as tapping on a starter.

So im a nebbie and only know fairly basic vehicle knowledge....but i have a 1995 F-150 which seems to have this similar problem..... it has been a problem for the past 2 years or so but the front tank would always have a hard time starting and when it would start it might die a few mins later. If the start up was okay then once you started going down the road the vehicle would lurch back and forth down the road and sometimes flooring the gas pedal would do nothing different then barely applying pressure.... this is only on the front tank...the back tank runs like a brand new vehicle and is completely smooth...oh and also it is a standard and that problem happened in all gears but occured the most between 1-3 gears....i have already tried fuel injector cleaners and have found know real improvement.........PLEASE HELP!!!

Same answer as in post #5 above. The pump in question would be the front pump.

 

Okay but just in case could it be anything else besides the selector switch or the fuel pump? and how do i go about repairing the fuel pump if its the problem.?can it be a do it yourself fix or do i need a shop to fix it? and how would i acces the front fuel pump?..... Thanks

 

You can either take the bed off, the way I like to do it.
Or you can drop the fuel tank.
You will need two fuel line disconnect tools to get the fuel lines off the FDM.
I like to spray WD-40 into the fuel connector and twist it to break the "O" ring free before I put the tool in the connector.
After the two lines are off remove the large ring, unplug the FDM from the frame plug and lift it out.
Then replace the whole FDM or cut the wires and remove the part that has the fuel pump in it. Push on a new one on and crimp the wire.

I seem to having the same problem on my 1996 Ford F250. Ran fine and now will not start. I turn the key on, but can't hear the front fuel pump running. I switch to the back tank and still no fuel pump running. Hard to believe both pumps went out at the same time. I checked the fuse box under the dash and under the hood...no fuses blow...I think. Any idea which fuse goes to the fuel pumps? Any suggestions on what to try next?

Is your truck OBD-1 or OBD-2?
Do you have spark?
Have you checked to see if you have any codes? If not do so as they may tell what is wrong.
Does any of the relays in the fuse box under the hood click when you turn on the key?
