You want to install the filter in the CAP, just like the oil filter. I don't know about the orientation, it seems like it's just going to turn with the cap as you screw the cap down. Got a reference for that?

on my 04 hfcm filter it has a notch in the filter base that has to align with a little alignment rib up in the cannister. what i did notice was that the cap on his hfcm tightened down flush with the metal can where mine got tight agout 1/8 th if a inch before the cap touched the metal base. does that seem right on a 04. the little picture instructions shows a little gap there but seems like it should have been touching. and stupid me didn't pay any attention when i took it off.

 

BPounds is right. The oil change guide in the tech folder has the Ford .pdf instructions link in it, and those say failure to drain the oil filter before the pan can cause some unfiltered oil to stay in the filter housing, then when you pull the filter and the drain opens, it drops the unfiltered stuff right back down into the pan with all the new stuff you just put in.

Just an FYI, Ford spec sheet also lists drain plug as a 3/4", and recommends installing a new copper gasket on the bolt every so often. I replaced it at 22,500 and 45,000 miles and haven't had a leak, for $2 it's not a bad investment.

 

Well I did my oil again and for the first time the fuel fileter, the filter on the chassis was a little bit of a pain, just remember that it has a 'key' on the filter which is around the 12 oclock position. I put the filter in first followed by the cap. The wire bundles do make it a touch difficult but easy for the back yard mechanics.

right and the passenger on the left, is the fuel filter under the hood the
one that I circled and the oil filter the other one to the left?

 

One you circled is the fuel filter. Be sure you oil the replacement oil before tightening down the caps on both types of filter changes.

 

You are saying I should oil down the fuel filter gasket with motor oil?

 

sorry about that, I guess my fingers are slower than the mind. The o-rings that go on the cap should be oiled before you screw the cap back on. Sure helps to ensure a good seal and easier to remove the next time.

 

What are the torque specs for the 2008 6.4L Fuel Filters?

 

Tech folder has it, don't quite recall. Also the lid has it right there as well.

I searched oil and fuel filter change via google and found your post and can't thank you enough for sharing the info on tools and procedures.

I have an 08 F250 6.4l and I did air, fuel and oil yesterday without any hiccups. I installed a Fumoto valve during the change so the next one will certainly be much easier and cleaner.

 

Just wanted to say "Thank You" to all for this thread. Successfully changed the fuel filters today on our 2009 F250SD. The primary was a PITA because of the awful positioning (who tucks away a frequently replaced filter behind a cross frame and routes a wiring harness and other fuel lines all around it?) but I got them both done. For all, there is also this link, posted by Ford on how to do the fuel filters as well.

Edit: Just changed the oil and filter last night as well(that's a LOT of oil!). Having a state recycling center within a mile of my house makes the oil disposal easy. I may just keep servicing this thing myself from now on.

Question: Is 5K a reasonable interval for oil and fuel filters? I just don't think the 10K interval recommended by Ford is good enough given the color of the oil I just drained at 5K. It was pretty black.
