Belhouseing to engine bolt pattern

Hey guys, I've been looking into 5 speed transmission options for a 200 I6. I have read that a 2.3 liter 4 cyl. is based on a 200 with two cyl lobbed off. Can any tell me if they share the same bolt pattern at the rear of the engine? If so this opens up a lot more options for my little bronco. Thanks fellas.

Bell to fit T5 to the 200. Not sure this is a good fit as the ratios and fitting to the TC are question marks.

IIRC, the 2.3 in the Tempo/Topaz was based on the old six. But those were FWD, so that trans is going to do you no good.

Pinto 2.3s are different motors, and Ranger 2.3s are also different--both being OHC motors....

5 speed transmission options for a 200 I6

Like every other question on mods or application "What's the intended use?" Crawler, rd vehicle, racer? "What kinda money?"
The NV3500 would probably work okay, I wouldn't waste my time or money on a 700R4... they have proven themselves weak to marginal for durability in stock form. A small block ZF (300, 302, 351w) is closer to a bolt in swap than anything else. The M5OD is okay in lighter duty on hwy applications.

There's lots of build threads, on the CB site, on all the 5 speeds.

The 200 does not share the bell pattern with the SBF, thus the ZF and M5OD aren't going to bolt up.

Note: this is commonly called the Ford Small-block V8 pattern, though it is used in some "big block"-sized V8's as well as some V6's and I6's.
  • 200 I6 1978-1983 only, partial (4 of 6 bolts) pattern.
  • 250 I6
  • 255 V8
  • 289 V8 - (made after August 3, 1964) - had 6 bolts holding bellhousing to block
  • 302 V8 including Boss 302
  • 302 Cleveland (Australia)
  • 351 Cleveland V8 (not the 351 Cleveland M-block engine)
  • 351 Boss
  • 351 Cobra Jet
  • 351 Windsor V8
  • 400 Cleveland M-block V8 aka 400FMX (certain 1973 casting numbers D1AE and D3AE, mated to the FMX transmission)
  • 3.8/3.9/4.2L Canadian Essex 90° V6 (RWD only)
  • 240 I6
  • 300 I6
  • 4.6L Modular V8 (first two casting runs, numbers F1AE and F2VE)
  • 5.0L V8
  • 5.8L V8

There is no 5 speed, ones listed above are adapted. Again CB is a good site for tech assistance on a 5 speed to the 200 I6 (esp for an early bronk - 170/2.8, 200). "6 Cylinder Performance Handbook" by D&D Schieldahl for the "sm 6" I6.

I think it's:

classicbroncos.com

I think it wuz set up by Jeff's BG in Michigan. Find the "transmissions" sticky(s). They have articles/pic of builds for the last 6 yrs. or so of 1/2 doz. auto and 1/2 doz. manual instals. Look for NV 3550, 4500, & ZF for your 5 speed.

The only direct bolt ups (not 5 speeds)I know are: the "2.77", "Dagenham", C4 (in my barn), and (what I have on the Bronk) RAN. The SROD (a 4 speed manual w/a OD 4th gear) came in the final few yrs. of Zepher n Fairmont's 3.3Lt, along w/ a small version of the c4, ford 3 speed auto, n a regular 4 speed. So B careful @ the junk yrd. They crush anything over 10 yr. old round here so if U find a 250 I6 let me know (fairmont, falcon, granada, mustang n more). Also a carb outta a pinto, mustang II, vega, gremlin, omni or vw (holley/weber 5200) has 245 - 270 cfm and could wake up the 200ci.

Best of luck with your swap, ck out our bronco forum, ford six and clifford as well (if U have time n $ to keep going on MORE mods). Let us know how you do!

Sorry I shot off my mouth so sooon, I don't follow the 200 I6 too much. There is 1 if the T5 is a 5 speed (must B a car tranny). Saw on another forum that the T5 will fit w/minor mods if it is a low mounted starter ('80-83).
PM me for particulars, if interested. T5 is not 4 me due to 70% off rd (ZF is!!).
Keep in touch.

Don't know what vehicle you're dealing with, look into a RUG 4 speed toploader.I don't believe a 5 speed will work all that well with a 200 unless you have a Mustang. Overdrive and a 200 will get pretty doggy unless your engine is built a bit.

Good point, but don't forget the "formula": 200 I6, this tranny, tire dia, & rear end gears.
