Hey everyone, Thought some of you might be able to help me out here. I have a 94 F350 Crew Cab With a 7.3L Turbo, It eats an awful lot of fuel, I drove it from Elgin to Tunica MS over the Christmas Holidays and when I got back I figured out the mileage at only 10.5 mpg any Ideas on how to boost this to around 14 or 15?? I will eat 1/4 tank of fuel going from Elgin to Batavia and back thats only 36 miles round trip...HELP PLEASE

 

Is it a powerstroke or IDI?
IF its the IDI turbo with a stock exhuast then you need to get new down pipes from the turbo. They are very restrictive.

If its a Powerstroke then you can put on a performance chip and a good exhuast and intake.

Use fuel treatment with cetane booster. its suppost to help burn better and lubricate. About 4.00 bottle of DieselKleen will treat 100 gallons.

Dad has a 4x4 SuperCab 7.3 IDI with 4.10 gears/auto and always runs 18-20 on the highway , empty ....

 

Yes that is empty on the highway and no my feet arent dragging the ground the only problem with it that I can see is one of the O-Rings is leaking, but its just a couple of drops, not bad. It runs great I have even been starting it up at -10 degrees without being plugged in. And since I had the trans fixed an E4OD it shifts great, I was thinking the injectors may be letting too much diesel fuel through but it doesn't smoke other than on start up. The down tubes only seem to be about 1 inch in diameter, Should I have larger tubes installed?

I'm only getting 14 to 15mpg also but mines a 99 f350 lariat drw 2wd. I want to get a tonneau cover for it to improve that millage on the hwy seems to get better mpg when the gate down.

 

you may want to try some dieselkleen or similar injection cleaner, and the version with the cetane booster helps too. I'm getting 12-14.5 mpg out of my 86 non turbo, 4.10 axles and 4speed non OD. Freeing up the exhaust and intake is key to more efficiency and power. I run a 3" exhaust now, and that has helped on the power more than the efficiency, the mileage came up when I started running the cleaner/cetane booster. I run with y tail gate up, btw, and get the mileage the same. I like my junk to stay in the box, darn plastic bedliners anyway...

I'll try the Injector cleaner and see what a new exhaust will run me. Should I also put a less restrictive muffler on? Like a glass pak or a thrush or would the stock type muffler be ok?

 

definitely get rid of the factory muffler. I built mine, so I can't say on the muffler, but free flowing is best. I built my exhaust, and reworked the Y pipe. Flow is key, so anything with less restriction is better. They actually make a turbo style see through muffler, the baffling is layed out in a swirl like the turbo flow exhaust will. You will have some trouble with the downpipe, but I think there is a 4" downpipe available. A couple inch body lift takes care of the space problem if that would be something of interest to you. Come on up to the prepowerstroke forum, there's plenty of info like that up there.

 

I sent the fuel milage question to my son, he has a 2003 Excurson W/6.0.
He lived in Anchorage Alaska last year an we went camping in Sewart he pull's a 27' trailer we flew up the moutains at 60 to 65 mph and he got 12mpg and you didn't even know it was behind you. He now lives in Willamsburg Va. and works in Langley Va. which he says is a 45min commute here is his reply also remember this thing weighs in at over 7000lbs.

I haven't reset my computer in about 2 months now and it's sitting right at 16.4 - which is great considering it does take a long time to warm up - and this is ALL driving, not just highway. I've noticed it's considerably quieter now - just turned over 30K miles a couple weeks ago. No problems since they finally fixed the oil leak "right". Nova teases me that I should be ready to trade it in since I've now had it right at a year - I told her I could keep that thing forever - I love it - especially the motor and the space...

 

I have a 01 F350 7.3 stock 4x4 crew cab long bed with a hard shell cover on it. Never have i got over 11 MPG with it ever and that was with a tail wind. I started to see a bit better MPG and found out that part of the seam blow off the muffler. so i put on a 4" exhaust on it from turbo back, then a 4 Banks chip and a very large air filter on it. 4 times larger air filter then was on it. Went on a trip with my dog and 1500# of rock in the bed of truck. On the turnpike and highway i was driving 70-75 MPH all the way. About a 350 mile round trip, i got 21 MPG with the wind and 19+ in to the wind. My 4 Bank chip has 50,75, 100 and 140+ on it, i was running on the 50 HP. Just before i got back i put on 75HP and my mileage started to get higher. I love my truck now and the power that i have is just WOW.
