Noob from Indiana

Already posted this in the introduction section, but thought I'd post it here since this is where I spend all my lurking time. Have been lurking on this site for quite a while, ever since I got this crazy notion in my head about rebuilding this truck. I finally joined last month, after a friend and I drove back home to PA and hauled it back here. Today is my first post.

My project is my grandfathers 1954 F100. He bought it new, and used it as a farm truck. It is the first vehicle that I ever drove. Last time it was licensed for the road was 1975, and it has been sitting in his garage for the last 35 years.

I posted some pics here as I have progressed in the deconstruction process.

Along the way I have picked up some good pointers, and have learned a lot from this site. I'm sure as I get further along in this I will have many questions. So thanks in advance!

Thanks. Going to try and keep it as stock as possible...with a couple exceptions. Upgrade to 12V, upgrade the brakes and add an electric windshield washer. Probably have to change the gearing in the rear end since it has a 3 92. Want to be able to drive it on the highway.

Welcome aboard, Indy! It's nice to have another semi-local in the ranks. I'm around Lafayette. You do have an excellent truck to start with. You're braver than I am. If I started with one that straight and solid, I'd have been tempted to just go through the mechanicals and leave the rest as it was - but I'm used to dealing with real heaps! Are you doing a stock restoration or are you making changes along the way?

Welcome to FTE!
Another "hoosier" on the board. What part of the great state of Indiana do you call home? Great truck you have there. Looks like you are taking lots of pictures as you go, that will help alot on the rebuild later. Good luck and keep us posted.

Great pictures, great truck and welcome.

I myself am still semi new to FTE. I don't post much but I troll the crap out of it. I decided to go with IFS and a four link. Lots of saving and lots of time and many challenges for me to come.

Good luck to you

Thanks everyone.

It hasn't really cost me much yet since I have just been disassembling the truck. But now I am at that point where I have to start spending money!

Started with buying a full gasket set, ring set, carb rebuilt kit and new freeze plugs for the engine. Got someone to tear it down and rebuild it for me as soon as my parts arrive. For some reason the local auto parts stores don't keep the gasket and ring sets in stock....I mean the truck is only 56 years old.

welcome, great truck!!..

about that gasket set.. yeh they seem awful hasty droppin stock now-adays!!

the cab corners look great!..

My 54 is disassembled, blasted clean, and ready for time and attention, which is in short supply lately what with work travel demands, and showing the green truck.

The rear cab corners are in good shape...however the front ones are shot. I will need the front floor pan, rocker panels, body mounts, front cowls, and gussets. Keeping this for last, since I will need to find someone with experience to help do this.

I plan on replacing the bed since it was in very bad shape...but what do you expect from a farm truck. The front clip I will evaluate as I go along. But most likely will be replacing most of it.

Oh and if anyone knows where I can find a 54 front grill...let me know...they are hard to find. Otherwise I will see if I can get someone to repair the original. Has some damage on it where my mom hit a deer with it.
