My uncle used to fly one of these when he was in the air force.

Yep, the old "Sabre Dog" The one you have pictured is a later variant. Earlier ones didn't have the nose cone, only a large intake.

What's amazing if you think about it is the technological difference in the engines of the two vehicles - built about the same time!

VERY COOL!
