can anyone here tell me how to properly use a propane ''cheater hose"

so my 77 is stuck in my yard and its out of fuel. and where its stuck i cant really winch or pull it out and need to drive it out. so i finally got my hands on a "cheater hose" and i cant seem to get it to any propane to transfer into the tank. i know tow truck drivers can do it so im not sure what im doing wrong? if anyone out there has any advice id really appreciate it cheers

You're engine is converted to propane right?

A "cheater" just allows you to use a BBQ tank to tie-into the fuel supply line to "temporarily" start or move the vehicle.

If you're tying into the line and the engine still isn't starting you'll need to check your ignition.

Oh an make sure the BBQ tank is upside down when you do it. I know we had to do that with a couple forklifts, wouldn't run with the tanks right side up.

i never tried driving while the bbq tank was attached to the main tank. i just tried filling some into the tank. so basically you cant put propane into the existing tank, you can just run on a portable tank right for a short distance with the tanks linked in a series??? is that right?

That's my understanding. We had a beater forklift that we needed moved and didn't want to mess with the existing propane tank, so we used a section of hose that connected to a fitting down the line. Just close off the valve going to the existing tank.

I think they have been trying to tell you that you cant connect it to the truck's TANK, you are going to have to connect to the fuel system ahead of the tank. At least thats what I got out of the last 2 or 3 threads about it.

You need to shut off the valve to the existing tank, otherwise the little BBQ tank is going to be trying to split the difference between the tank and carb and it doesn't have enough oomph to do it.

That's why you tap in down the line with the tank shut off.

I am not sure if a tow truck driver would carry a propane tank and "cheater" hose as I believe it is technically illegal to do such a thing.

I know it is illegal to try to fill one tank with another tank.
