steering shaft question

As i've been working on the panel i noticed the shaky welding on the steering column for the conversion to the toyota steering. the outside tube for the column stops about 6" above the floor leaving the steering shaft exposed. the welded on piece to the u-joint looks as if it's welded to another piece that tapers down into the stock shaft . so i have a few options.....1 is to cover the whole mess with a collar and attach it to the mid fifty bottom plate i have, 2 is to get a new shaft and extend the column, 3 is to use the postal jeep column i have and 4 is to get a new column/box and start over (everyone wants an f100 box for their hot rod so they're pricey).
i'm leaning towards the postal jeep column, i've read that the toyota p/s box uses the same spline as a gm (3/4 x 36). the postal jeep column is 1 1/2 dia just like the f100, looks just like the f100 also. it has the 3/4 x 36 splined end, it's about 32" total, it has the horn trigger coming out of the top of the column so i can put the horn in the right place. i also have a Borgeson u joint that's 3/4x36 to 3/4x36 (both column and u joint i had for about 10 years....lucky nobody wanted them), just need to make some mods for the ford collar and turn signal switch. i'm not sure of the steering wheel spline on the jeep column or the ford.

my questions are, what diameter is the stock steering shaft and what spline size and teeth number are the stock steering wheel.

Thanks, Dan

Shoot I have the specs for the 48-52 boxes, but I think the 54 is different. I'll at least bump this back up for you.

Stu has a 54 Salesmans Handbook and it should have the steering box specs in that (it's in the 51 Handbook). If he doesn't come on, write him a PM

Thanks again Julie, I just pulled it apart......I was about 1/2 way there anyhow . Well it's a 3/4" shaft with a 11/16" splined area for the steering wheel and it has 40 splines for the wheel. Now to take apart the DJ5 column and see what I have. In the picture where the boot is, that's where the floor is and the shaft is exposed about 6" up.......the last pic is the postal jeep column.

ok DJ5 column is 7/8"x36 spline at the steering wheel and not enough thickness to machine it down (it had the center dilled out for the horn).
